Inserting/Charging the battery 1 2 3 AAA LR03 battery (included) Make sure the battery faces the right directions. • If rechargeable batteries are to be used, rechargeable batteries manufactured by Panasonic are recommended. Hold function Before operating, switch Hold off, when finished, switch Hold on. This unit has no power button. After the battery is inserted, “ ” blinks on the display when the time is not set (e.g. at the time of purchase). (After approx. 1 minute, the display changes to “ ” (blinking) in Hold off condition.) The clock is used for preserving recording date and setting timer recording. Please set the time first. Recording is possible even if the clock is not set. However, the Recording date, Recording start time is displayed as “ ”. STOP When “ ” is blinking • Switch Hold off (➜ page 6).
Recording settings This unit has 4 recording setting items related to recording quality. Using different combinations of recording settings, you can adjust audio quality according to recording situations.
Recording Slide recording position switch to select a position. 2 Switch modes according to situations (➜ page 8). Select a folder for recording. (➜ right) The folder is switched each time you press •FOLDER/ − MENU . Select among “ ”. (The factory setting is “ ”.) When you select “ ”, recording is automatically saved in “ ”. (If the folder already contains 99 files, the next folder with recordable space is used.) 3 Press REC/PAUSE (Recording starts).

Changing recording settings (Zoom microphone)/Monitoring the recording in progress Monitoring the recording in progress When the zoom is set to “ ”, the surrounding sound volume is lowered, and the sound in front is clearly recorded. Timer recording Timer Recording can be set to make one recording at a specified time on this unit. A recording automatically starts at the start time and ends at the finish time. • Set the time beforehand (➜ page 7). • Select the folder for recording and recording position (➜ pages 8, 9). • Press STOP to stop the unit. •FOLDER/ − MENU 1 Recording indicator •FOLDER/ − MENU Press and hold until the menu screen is displayed. “ STOP ”(blinking) is displayed.

Setting the Playback speed control function Playback speed can be adjusted at 5 different speeds. 1 − Press and hold •FOLDER/ MENU during playback until “ “SPEED ” (lighting) are displayed. “ •FOLDER/ − MENU STOP ” is not displayed when “ ” is selected. 2 Press i to select “SPEED” and press q/g to enter. 3 Press u, i to select playback speed SPEED ALL RQT9124 4 XP SPEED When pressing i, the playback speed becomes faster and the blinking bar moves to the right.
Setting Slight return playback This function makes it easier to hear sounds during playback. You cannot make this setting when “ ” is selected. Slight Return Playback function: When u is pressed during playback, the play point reverses about 5 seconds, and playback resumes from the point. 1 •FOLDER/ − MENU Press and hold during playback until “ ” (blinking) and “SPEED ” (lighting) are displayed. 2 Press q/g to enter. 3 Press u, i to select “ and press q/g to enter. Repeat play/Successive play, A-B Repeat play REPEAT Repeat play/Successive play A-B Repeat play Each time you press REPEAT , the playback style is switched as follows. Dividing files One file can be divided up to 30 times. •FOLDER/ − MENU INDEX/DIVIDE at the point where you wish to XP divide the file. (“ ” is not displayed when the slight return playback has been set.) 2 Press i to select “ ” and press q/g to enter. Index function The term Index for this unit refers to a mark (point) that is added to a desired stop point when playback is jumped (skipped). When you press u, i while playing, the playback is skipped to the closest Index point. The maximum number of Indexes is 16 per 1 file. •FOLDER/ − MENU INDEX/DIVIDE STOP Adding Index during recording 1 Press •FOLDER/ − MENU INDEX/DIVIDE at the point where you wish to add the Index. “ ” and the recording elapsed time at that point blink for 2 seconds.
• Select a file or folder which has Index to be cancelled (➜ page 10). • Press STOP to stop the unit. Security functions If you set a password, password authentication is necessary when playing back this unit or connecting to a computer. When the unit is lost or stolen, the recorded data stored in this unit cannot be played or the computer does not recognise this unit as long as the password does not match. Use the supplied USB cable. Do not use the supplied cable to other devices.
Opening the folder of this unit using a computer The illustrations show Windows XP (OS). The display may differ depending on the OS. • Connect this unit to a Computer beforehand (➜ page 27). 1. Click [Start] → [My Computer]. This unit is displayed as a removable disk. 2. Right-click to open the removable disk (this unit). The folders (A to D, MUSIC) in this unit appear. (They are displayed as on this unit’s screen.
Importing recorded files to a computer 1. Select the recorded file in this unit, right-click and select [Copy]. 2. Select a folder in the computer, right-click and select [Paste] to import to the computer. Delete unnecessary files using the computer: Select the recorded file in this unit, right-click, select [Delete] and [Yes] to enter.
Returning the files imported to the computer to this unit • Open the audio folder (A to D) of this unit beforehand (➜ page 28). Returning recorded files to this unit from the computer 1. Select the recorded file imported to the computer (➜ page 29), right-click and select [Copy]. 2. Select the original folder in this unit, right-click and select [Paste] to return the recorded file. Listening to the music on this unit (Transferring MP3 music files to this unit) You can enjoy music by transferring MP3 music files stored in the computer to this unit. 1. Select an MP3 music file or folder which has MP3 music files in the computer, right-click and select [Copy]. 2. Select MUSIC folder of this unit, right-click and select [Paste] to transfer to this unit. * The files in the folder that was created into the MUSIC folder are playable.

Creating MP3 music files 1. Select [Start] - [All Programs] and start [Windows Media Player] on the computer. 2. Select [Rip] → [Format] → [mp3]. 3. Select [Rip] → [Bit Rate] and select among [128kbps] (Smallest Size), [192kbps], [256kbps] and [320kbps] (Best Quality). If you select low Bit Rate for ripping, more songs will be ripped. 4. Select [Rip] → [Rip CD Automatically When Inserted] and select [Never]. 5. Set music CD into the computer. 6. In “ ” for the album, add the check mark as “ ”.

Troubleshooting guide Before requesting service, make the following checks. If you are in doubt about some of the check points, or if the remedies indicated in the chart do not solve the problem, consult your dealer for instructions. Symptom Battery Cannot recharge the battery. Checkpoints RQT9124 • Recharging may take dozens of seconds to start when you use rechargeable batteries that had not been used for a long period.
Symptom Checkpoints Display • If the battery is depleted to the very low level and the display does not appear, “ ” is displayed even if the unit is connected to the computer and the computer does not recognise this unit. When using the rechargeable battery (➜ page 2), continue charging. After charging is complete, disconnect this unit from the computer once and reconnect it. • When using a dry-cell battery, replace it with a new battery. • If the battery has not been set, insert the battery (➜ page 5).
RQT9124 Troubleshooting guide 38 Symptom Checkpoints Record The playback time is longer • Depending on the combination of recording settings (➜ page 8), than the recording time. the playback time may be approx. 1 or 2 seconds longer than the recording time. Cannot set timer recording. • The timer covers 24 hours from the present time only. • Recording periods that are 8 hours or longer cannot be set using the timer. • Set the time before setting the timer recording (➜ page 7).
• Ensure the plug is inserted firmly. • Wipe the plug clean. • Please lower the microphone sensitivity (➜ page 14) or keep the distance from the recording sound source. • There is no sound when you have connected earphones. • Move a mobile telephone away from this unit when you use the two in the same area. • Reduce noise ( ➜ page 19). Noise is reduced and listening may become easier. Recorded sounds contain noise that makes it difficult to hear sounds.
