Preparation Quick Guide This is an overview of how to record and playback pictures with the camera. Preparation About the Battery (charging/number of recordable pictures) w Battery indication The remaining battery power appears on the screen. Preparation Inserting/Removing the Battery 3 Close the card/battery door. Slide the release lever in the direction of the arrow. • Check that the camera is turned off and that the lens is retracted. OPEN LOCK 1 Slide the release lever in the direction of the arrow and open the card/battery door. Preparation About the Card Please confirm the latest information on the following website. w Access to the card The card access indication lights red when pictures are being recorded onto the card. (This Site is English only.) 3 When the card access indication lights, pictures are being read or deleted or the card is being formatted. Do not: • Turn the camera off. • Remove the battery or the card. • Shake or impact the camera. • Disconnect the AC adaptor (DMW-AC5; optional).
Preparation Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) w Initial setting The clock is not set so the following screen appears when you turn the camera on. Basic w Focusing • The focus range is 50 cm (1.64 feet) to c. Use macro mode when recording close-up pictures. (P48) • If the distance between the camera and the subject is beyond the focus range of the camera, the picture may not be properly focused even if the focus indication lights. • In the following cases, the camera will not focus on subjects properly. – When there are both near and distant subjects in a scene. – When there is dirt or dust on glass between the lens and the subject.

Advanced w Histogram • A histogram is a graph that displays brightness along the horizontal axis (black to white) and the number of pixels at each brightness level on the vertical axis. • It allows you to easily check a picture’s exposure. • It is very useful if manual adjustments of the lens aperture and shutter speed are available, especially in those situations where automatic exposure may be difficult due to uneven lighting.
Advanced Brightening the LCD Monitor (Power LCD/High angle mode) • If the mode dial is set to [ ], the Power LCD function only can be used. 1 Press [LCD MODE] for 1 second. DISPLAY/LCD MODE [ ]: The LCD monitor [POWER LCD] becomes brighter and easier to see even when taking pictures outdoors. The LCD monitor is [ ]: [HIGH ANGLE] easier to see when taking pictures with the camera held high above your head. This is useful when you cannot get close to the subject because there is a person in the way.
Advanced w Canceling High angle mode or Power LCD • If you press and hold [LCD MODE] again for 1 second the screen shown in step 2 is displayed. Select [OFF] to cancel Power LCD mode or High angle mode. • High angle mode is also canceled if you turn the camera off or power save mode is activated. • The brightness of the pictures displayed on the LCD monitor is adjusted when Power LCD mode or High angle mode is activated. Therefore, some subjects may look different on the LCD monitor.
Advanced : AUTO The flash is automatically activated when the recording conditions make it necessary. : AUTO/Red-eye reduction_1 The flash is automatically activated when the recording conditions make it necessary. It is activated once before the actual recording to reduce the red-eye phenomenon (eyes of the subject appearing red in the picture) and then activated again for the actual recording. • Use this when you take pictures of people in low lighting conditions.

Advanced Optical Image Stabilizer This mode detects jitter and compensates for it. 1 Press and hold the optical image stabilizer button until [STABILIZER] appears. 2 Move / to select the stabilizer function mode and then press [MENU/SET]. Advanced w Technique for Party mode • Since the shutter speed becomes slower, we recommend using a tripod and the self-timer (P43) for taking pictures. • We recommend rotating the zoom lever to Wide (1M) and being about 1.5 m (4.92 feet) from the subject when taking pictures. [FIREWORKS] Press [ ] to display the [SCENE MODE] menu and select a scene mode. (P49) This mode allows you to take beautiful pictures of fireworks exploding in the night sky. MENU /SET 3 • The flash setting can be set to Slow sync.
Advanced [STARRY SKY] Press [ ] to display the [SCENE MODE] menu and select a scene mode. (P49) This mode allows you to take vivid pictures of a starry sky or a dark subject that you could not take in [NIGHT SCENERY] by making the shutter speed slower. MENU /SET 3 15 w Setting the shutter speed • Select a shutter speed of [15 SEC.], [30 SEC.] or [60 SEC.]. 1 Move / to select the number of seconds and then press [MENU/SET]. w Technique for Starry sky mode • The shutter opens for 15, 30 or 60 seconds.
Advanced [AERIAL PHOTO] [SNOW] Press [ ] to display the [SCENE MODE] menu and select a scene mode. (P49) This mode allows you to take pictures through an airplane window. MENU /SET Press [ ] to display the [SCENE MODE] menu and select a scene mode. (P49) This mode will adjust the white balance and the exposure to show the snow as white as possible.
