Glossary
Sample rate When converting a digital signal, the analogue sound signal is sampled at certain time
intervals. The number of samples per second is called the .
The higher the , the better the reproduction of the original sound.

sample rate
Bitstream Digital multi-channel audio data (e.g. 5.1 channel) before decoding to the individual
channels.
Optical digital audio cable When connecting with this cable, the electronic signals are converted into optical signals
for output to the amplifier.
TM
DiSEqC Digital Satellite Equipment Control is a control system for selecting several LNBs
TM
at one input. DiSEqC is a registered trademark of EUTELSAT.
DivX (Direct-Video-eXpress) A format for storing compressed audio and video data developed by
DivX Networks. It is based on MPEG4, but with far more compact storage to about one
tenth of the uncompressed file format with satisfactory quality.
DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) DPOF is the standard format for printing still pictures taken with a digital camera etc.
It enables automatic printing in a photo shop or on your own printer.
Chrominance signal The signals Red, Green and Blue can be converted into three other signals: luminance
signal Y (luminance signal) and 2 chrominance signals P /P (colour difference signals)
BR
Brightness signal Y Analogue video signal showing the brightness levels of the picture, regardless of the
colour signal (C) chrominance signal. It permits higher resolution and colour fidelity.
Down conversion This is the remixing of multi-channel sound to two channels for stereo output.
Sound mixing makes sense if you want to playback the 5.1 channel sound of a DVD
over your television speakers. However, some discs do not allow sound mixing.
In this case, only the two front channels are output.
LNB (Low Noise Block Converter) Reception component of the dish.satellite
LPCM (Linear PCM) These are uncompressed digital signals similar to those on CDs.
LPCM sound can be used when recording in XP mode.
PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) Standard for uncompressed digital audio signals.
RGB (Red Green Blue) RGB values define colours. The colour results from the intensity of the Red, Green and
Blue shares in the pixel.
TIFF (Tag Image File Format) This is a system used for compressing/decoding colour still pictures, a common format
for storing high quality images on digital cameras and other devices.
Transponder The signals of a broadcasting station are received by a transponder on a satellite. The
transponder converts them to frequencies and sends them to satellite near the
ground. A transponder can broadcast several TV and radio programmes or data in parallel.
dishes
JPEG (Joint Photographic A system for compressing or decoding colour still pictures, with only slight losses in
Experts Group) picture quality in spite of extensive compression.
Screen resolution 1080i: To generate a half picture, 1080 (1125) alternating picture lines are scanned once
in 1/50 seconds in a high definition picture. The TV pictures of 480i (525i) are more than
doubled, the picture is far clearer.
720p: To generate a full picture, 720 (750) picture lines are scanned once in
1/50 seconds. There is slight flicker in the picture, because the picture lines cannot
be scanned alternately.
