Customizing Palm Web Browser
281
Controlling how Palm Web Browser accesses the Internet
Because some wireless Internet Service Providers (ISPs) charge by the amount of
data you download, Palm Web Browser is careful to limit how often it accesses the
Internet. If you have a faster or more permanent connection to the Internet (such
as a wireless Ethernet attachment), the default settings should work for you.
If you have a slower or more expensive Internet connection, you can enable two
settings that prevent Palm Web Browser from accessing the Internet unless you
approve.
To change connection settings:
1. Press Function + Menu .
2. Tap Options, and then tap Preferences.
3. Tap Connecting.
4. Tap the check box next to one of the following options to enable or disable that
option:
By default, both of these options are disabled (that is, there are no checks in the
check boxes).
5. Press Function + Enter , or tap Done.
Viewing web content with plug-ins
Some web pages require special Palm OS applications, called plug-ins, to display
their contents. Plug-ins are Palm OS applications that you install and that work
with Palm Web Browser to display web page content. For instance, a plug-in might
help you display a file type that Palm Web Browser doesn’t normally support;
another plug-in might retrieve your address from Address Book to help you fill in
a form.
Finding and installing plug-ins
If a web page requires a plug-in, the page is likely to provide a link to let you
download the plug-in directly to your handheld. Like other Palm OS applications,
the plug-in appears in the Applications Launcher.
Plug-ins can only be used by Palm Web Browser. Tapping a plug-in’s icon in the
Applications Launcher gives you information about that plug-in.
Ask before
connecting
Palm Web Browser notifies you before it accesses the
Internet.
Offer old content
if available
Palm Web Browser displays old pages from its History list
instead of retrieving pages from the Internet, even if the old
pages are outdated. Old pages display a banner to let you
know how old they are.
