LUMENS INSTEAD OF WATTS
We recommend the following comparable wattages
The switch to lumens.
Why lumens instead of watts? As incandescent lamps disappear from the market it will no longer make
sense to use the watt as a reference value for the light output of a lamp. Modern lamp technologies need
very different amounts of power to produce the same light output. It is therefore more appropriate to indi-
cate the luminous flux in lumen. This unit is defined as all the light emitted from a light source in all
directions. The brightness of different lamp technologies can therefore be easily compared.
What are the benefits of indicating brightness in lumen?
• More accurate indication of the light output of a lamp.
• Better comparison between different types of lamp.
• Greater transparency for selecting appropriate replacements
for conventional incandescent lamps.
What do I need to think about when replacing a
conventional incandescent lamp?
Example: Your 60 W incandescent lamp has 710 lumen. You can
choose either an energy-saving lamp (such as OSRAM DULUX
®
SUPERSTAR Mini Globe) at 11 W/630 lumen (more economical)
or the same model at 15 W/850 lumen (somewhat brighter).
