How to Care for a Cast Iron Plant
Aspidistra elatior
PLANT PREP: Open box upon arrival, remove packing materials to let the plant “breathe”. Remove
tape and newspaper. Water well. There are drainage holes in the bottom of the pot so do this outside
where the extra water will drain away.
SELECT SITE:
Grows Outdoors All Year Only in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 6,7,8,9
Grow Indoors in All Other Zones
Thrives in daytime temperatures of 70-75 deg F; 50-55 deg F at night with low, indirect
sunlight and evenly moist soil, in colder winter areas where temperatures regularly fall below
25 deg F, grow in a pot outdoors during summer season and bring indoors before first frost.
Light Requirements:
An adaptable plant that will cope with any light levels except full sun or total darkness.
This shrub will grow to 3 ft. tall & wide when grown indoors.
For an outdoor hedge, space 2 ft. away from other plants or structures.
Soil:
Grow in most soils.
Children & Pets:
Not known to be harmful to people, cats, or dogs.
WATERING REGIMEN:
No special watering regimen needed, especially when planted outdoors, although plant does
enjoy evenly moist soil. Only water when the soil has almost fully dried out. Air humidity levels
are not important.
Vital watering tips:
• Make sure the pot has drainage holes in the bottom.
• Water deeply when top 1-2” of soil is dry.
• Water less frequently in winter months, always using soil moisture levels as a guide.
FERTILIZER/FOOD:
Feed every 2-3 months if desired with a general house plant fertilizer, following package
directions.
PESTS/OTHER PROBLEMS:
Rarely bothered by pests, treat scale or mealy bugs with an oil spray when needed. Control
aphids with an insecticidal soap.
PRUNING/TRIMMING:
Pruning rarely needed.
