E ■ Do not touch the electrical contacts on this product with your hands. ■ Be sure that the adapter is correctly oriented and rightside up when inserting it in the floppy disk drive. Improper insertion could damage the adapter and/or computer. ■ Do not touch the terminals (connection surface) on the SmartMedia with your hand or a metallic object. Doing so may generate static electricity which could destroy the data recorded on the card.

E ■ Do not turn the power off or touch any buttons on the FDD while the FDD is running. This could destroy the data recorded on the card. ■ The Floppydisk Adapter cannot apply write protection to data recorded on the SmartMedia card. The Floppydisk Adapter does not recognize the write protection function even when a write protect sticker is attached to the SmartMedia. Always use with care when writing data to the SmartMedia. Be especially careful not to erase or overwrite necessary data.

E BATTERY HANDLING ■ Use two CR2016 lithium coin batteries to power the equipment. ■ Be sure to use the batteries properly. Improper use may result in fluid leak, heat generation or damage of the batteries. When replacing batteries, insert them correctly with respect to the +/- polarity. ■ If the + or - pole of a battery is stained with sweat, oil or grease, contact failure may result. Wipe batteries well with a dry cloth before use.

E PREPARATION SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Check the following before using this product. For Windows 3.1/Windows 95 Compatible PC Make sure that your computer is an IBM PC/AT compatible machine. Compatible FDD Make sure that the FDD connected to your computer is a 1.44 MB FDD and that it is connected using an ordinary interface. This product cannot be used with an external FDD connected via a PC card, a high recording capacity FDD such as a 120 MB FDD or a FDD supporting 2.88 MB diskettes.

E Using the Utility Program In order to use the floppy disk adaptor, you first have to run the ReadFlashPath data read utility. 1 Quit all programs and ensure that only the Finder is running. The ReadFlashPath utility operates under the assumption that is running alone. 2 Start up the ReadFlashPath utility only from your hard drive or from a hard drive directly connected to your computer.

Insert the adaptor with SmartMedia into your floppy disk drive (see next section). The adaptor and utility program will not function correctly if the adaptor is inserted into external floppy disk drive or secondary internal drive. Correct operation is possible only with primary built-in floppy disk drive.

OPERATION E INSERTING THE SMARTMEDIA CARD INTO THE FLOPPYDISK ADAPTER Insert the SmartMedia card into the Floppydisk Adapter so that the contact on the SmartMedia is oriented to the opposite side of adapter’s metallic surface. Make sure you insert the SmartMedia in the same direction as shown in the illustration. CAUTION 50 ◆ The SmartMedia shown in the illustration is the 3.3 V-driven product. ◆ Normal operation is not possible if the Smart Media is not inserted completely.

E INSERTING THE FLOPPYDISK ADAPTER INTO THE FDD Insertion Before inserting the Floppydisk Adapter in the FDD, completely wipe off all dirt and dust from the rectangular recess at the top center on the back of the Floppydisk Adapter. Also wipe the black section at the top center (on the exact opposite side of the recess) on the front of the adapter. After ensuring that all dirt and dust has been removed, insert the Floppydisk Adapter into the FDD.

E CAUTION ◆ The Floppydisk Adapter does not recognize write protect status even if a write protect sticker is attached to the SmartMedia card, Be very careful not to inadvertently erase or overwrite recorded data. ◆ To ensure safety, we recommend to clean the FDD head with a commercially available head cleaner before inserting the Floppydisk Adapter. ◆ To extend the battery life, always eject the Floppydisk Adapter from the FDD unless access is required.
