Glossary Terms
3D OCR® A technology developed by Caere that uses grayscale
information to increase accuracy when recognizing scanned text
characters.
active window The window on the computer desktop where the next
action will take place.

ASCII An acronym for American Standard Code for Information
Interchange. This is a code used for representing text inside a
computer and for transmitting text between computers or between a
computer and a peripheral device.
auto zoning The process OmniPage Pro uses to automatically draw and
order zones on a page image.
automatic document feeder (ADF) A device that allows you to scan
multiple pages without having to place each page in the scanner. Some
ADFs are built into scanners; others are add-on products.
automatic processing Using OmniPage Pro’s AUTO button to process
an open document or a new document from start to finish according to
the selected process commands.
bitmapped image A collection of bits (dots) in memory that represent a
scanned image.
default A preset response to a question or prompt. The default is
automatically used by the computer if you do not supply a different
response or setting.
Direct Input A feature that allows you to invoke OmniPage Pro from
the Apple menu, perform OCR on an image, and automatically paste
the resulting text into a document in another application.
dithering A dithering pattern is how a picture's gray areas are
represented by black and white pixels. Different scanners offer a
different choice of dithering patterns.
dots per inch (dpi) The number of dots per linear inch that a printer can
print or a scanner can scan.
