Controlling access to User Profiles
IfyouhavemultipleDragonend-usersonanend-userworkstation,thoseend-userswill
havemultipleUserProfilestochoosefrominDragon'sOpenUserProfiledialogbox.
IfyouuseashareddirectoryforUserProfiles,whethertheyareroamingornon-roaming,
youmaybeconcernedabouttheabilityofanend-usertoseeand/oropenanotherend-
user’sprofileaswellastheirabilitytoopenthecorrectprofile.Thereareseveralwaysto
addressthisconcern:
n ManyofNuance’scustomersaddressthisconcernsimplythroughend-usertraining.
Eachend-usershouldbeawarethatiftheyopenanotherend-user’sprofileandtryto
useit,theiraccuracywillbepoorandend-user-specificcustomizationswillnotbe
available.Therefore,eachend-userhasanincentivetouseonlytheirownprofile.
However,thisfactdoesn'tpreventamaliciousend-userfromdamaginganotherend-
user’sprofile.
n Ifend-usersalwayslogintoWindowswithauniqueWindowsuserID,youcanuse
Windowsfilepermissionstocontrolaccesstothefiles.Typically,youdothisby
grantingFullControlorRead/Write/Modifyaccesstotheshareddirectory,butdonot
allowthispermissiontopropagatetosub-directories.Thatway,eachend-user
becomesthecreatorownerofanyDragonUserProfilethatheorshecreates.End-
userscanstillseealloftheDragonUserProfilesintheOpenUserProfiledialogbox,
butiftheytrytoselectanotherend-user’sprofile,amessagewillappearsayingthat
theydonothavepermissiontoaccessthatprofile.Applysimilarfilepermissionstothe
localcopyofeachRoamingUserProfile;thedefaultlocationforlocalcopiesisunder
C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking13\RoamingUsersforWindows7,
Windows8,andWindowsServer2008.
n Ifend-usersloginusingasharedWindowsuserID,thebestwaytocontrolaccessis
throughHTTPRoaming.Inthisconfiguration,yousetupawebserverrunningeither
IISorApacheandwiththeWebDAVfilesystemenabled.Oneachworkstation,you
specifyaURLonthewebserverastheRoamingUserProfilelocation.Whenanend-
userlaunchesDragon,beforedisplayingtheOpenUserProfiledialogitpromptsfora
usernameandpassword,whichitusestoauthenticateagainstthewebserver.
