Chapter 7: Dictating Text
Insomecases,youmaynotknowthatawordisnotintheactiveVocabularyuntilDragon
NaturallySpeakingfailstorecognizeitcorrectly.Whetheryouarespellingawordaspartof
yourdictationorcorrectingamisrecognition,theprocessisthesame.
To spell a word or phrase
WhenyouwanttoaddanewwordtotheVocabulary,say"Spell"or"SpellThat"
(immediatelyafterarecognitionerror)andthecharactersofthewordorwordsyouwantto
spell.Saythecharacterscontinuouslyandquickly,notoneatatime.

The"UndoThat"commandisnotavailableintheSpellingwindow.Ifyouneedtocorrecta
dictationerrorbyvoicewhileyouareusingtheSpellingwindow,youmayusethe“Scratch
That,”“Backspace,”or“Delete”commands.
Foralistofthecharactersyoucanspellwiththe"Spell"or"SpellThat"commands,see
Spellingcharacters.
Ifyouusethe"SpellThat"command,sayingthecharactersimmediatelyisoptional;youcan
simplywaitfortheSpellingwindow,toopenbeforeyoubeginspelling.Spellingwordswhile
theSpellingwindowisopenallowsyoutoconfirmthatthewordiscorrectbeforeitappears
inyourdocumentandallowsyoutotrainthepronunciationoftheword.Forinformationon
trainingawordthatyouhavespelled,seethetopicTrainingwordsfromtheSpelling
window.
Forpreviouslydictatedtext,selectthewordorwordsyouwanttocorrect,thensay"Spell
That"followedimmediatelybyletters.
Notes
n Normally,theSpellingwindow,doesnotappearwhenyouusethe"Spell"command.
Youcanmakeitappearbyselectingthe"SpellcommandsbringupSpellingwindow"
optionontheCorrectiontaboftheOptionsdialogbox.
n Whileyouarespellingwords,youmustsay"cap"beforeeachcharacteryouwantto
capitalize.Pausebrieflyaftersayingthecapitalletterandbeforeyousaythenext
letter.
n Youcansay"Double"beforeanyalphabeticcharactertoentertwoofthesame
characters.Forexample,say"Doublea"toenter"aa."Youcanalsosay"Double
Zulu"toenter"zz."Youcannot,however,say"Doubleu"togettwo"u"characters
(andnot"w").Inthiscase,youcansay"DoubleLetteru."
n Youcannotsaythenormalformsofletters(forexample"A")andtheiralpha-bravo
forms(forexample"Zulu")togetherinasinglebreath("AZulu").Youcanmixthemif
youpausebeforeyouchangethespellingformat.
n Inversion13.x,withinnormaldictation,Dragonnolongerrecognizesitsbuilt-in
alternatepronunciationsofletters(alpha,bravo,Charlie,delta,etc.whichsome
peoplecall“militaryalphabet”or“phoneticalphabet”)--therefore,saying“bravo
Charlie”willbetranscribedas“bravoCharlie.”Toavoidambiguitywiththe
correspondingwords,theseletterpronunciationsarereservedforspellingout:this
meanswhenoneisintheSpellingWindow,wheninSpellMode,andwhengivinga
Spellcommand–forexample,thecommand“spellspaceCharliealphapapa”.
n YoucansaynearlyanycharacterofthestandardWindowscharacterset.Seethe
