Intended Use The NorTrac 3-Pt. Spike Tooth Harrow is built and designed for cutting through clods, manure, and grasses to break up material into finer pieces so that it can be spread evenly across the ground. The harrow does an excellent job of smoothing garden plots, fields, arenas, and landscaping areas. It loosens crusted soil, aerates legume crops, such as alfalfa, and uncovers overwintering insects.
Important Safety Information Read and understand all instructions. Failure to follow all instructions may result in serious injury or property damage. The warnings, cautions, and instructions in this manual cannot cover all possible conditions or situations that could occur. Exercise common sense and caution when using this tool. Always be aware of the environment and ensure that the tool is used in a safe and responsible manner.
Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Do not use the tool when tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. Remove keys or wrenches before connecting the tool to an air supply, power supply, or turning on the tool. A wrench or key that is left attached to a rotating part of the tool may cause personal injury. Secure the work with clamps or a vise instead of your hand when practical.
To prevent property damage, watch for and avoid catching the tines on stumps, large rocks, and other immovable objects. DO NOT use if the implement is damaged. Repair it before continuing use. Park and store on a hard, level surface. Store out of reach of children. Not for use by or around children. FALLING OFF CAN RESULT IN IMPALEMENT OR BEING RUN OVER. Tractor must be equipped with Roll Over Protection Structure (or ROPS CAB) and a seat belt.
Assembly Instructions Tractor Requirements Tractor horsepower and hitch category should be within the range noted below. Tractors outside the horsepower range must not be used. Tractor Horsepower Rating . . . . . . . . . . . Up to 45 HP 3-Point Hitch Category . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Category I Ballast weights may be required to maintain steering control. Refer to your tractor’s Operator’s Manual to determine proper ballast requirements.
5. For safety, lay the hitch frame down until it’s resting on the adjusting bar (#3). Tractor Hook-Up Hooking up a tractor to equipment is dangerous and can result in serious injury or death. Do not allow anyone to stand between the Spike Tooth Harrow and the tractor during hook-up operations. Do not operate hydraulic 3-point lift controls while someone is directly behind the tractor or near the harrow. A 3-point, category I hitch is required.
4. Attach the lower arms to the hitch pins and secure with linch pins. 5. Connect the top center 3-point link to the upper center hitch point with a clevis pin. Secure the clevis pin with a hairpin cotter pin. (Clevis pins and hairpin cotter pins are furnished by customer.) 6. Return to the tractor and slowly raise the harrow until it’s several inches off the ground. 7. Set the 3-point lift arms for a lateral float. 8.
Center 3-Point Link Leveling NOTE: The bushing in the center of the hitch is used when attaching the harrow with a Quick Hitch. 1. Lower the harrow until the teeth are resting on the ground. 2. Adjust the length of the center 3-point link until the upper center hitch pin is vertically above the lower 3-point hitch pins. This arrangement allows for optimum ground contour following performance. A level placed against the vertical edge of the hitch can be used to verify this adjustment. 3.
Hitch Height & Chain Adjustment IMPORTANT: The harrow bars (#1) and the hitch pivot point (#2) should all be equal distance from the ground as the harrow is pulled forward by the tractor. It is subject to uneven tooth wear if one end is lower than the other. 1. Using the tractor’s 3-point hydraulic control lever, raise or lower the 3-point lift arms until the harrow bars (#1) and the hitch pivot point (#2) are all an equal distance off the ground from front to back when traveling forward. 2.
pinch point hazard and/or falling hazard. Pulling on the angle adjustment lever with teeth resting on the ground can strain a person’s back and/or body extremities. 1. Raise the harrow up until the spike teeth are off the ground. 2. Place supports (tall enough to support the teeth off the ground) under the support harrow frame, and then lower the harrow onto the supports. 3. Place the gear selector in park, shut the tractor engine off, set the park brake, and remove the switch key. 4.
4. Force out air bubbles with the edge of a credit card or other straight edge. Before Each Use Operating Checklist Hazard control and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, prudence, and proper training involved in the operation, transport, storage, and maintenance of the Spike Tooth Harrow. Therefore, it is absolutely essential that no one operates the Spike Tooth Harrow without first having read, fully understood, and become totally familiar with the Operator’s Manual.
Operating Instructions Do not operate the harrow with loose pins, bolts, and nuts. Loose hardware can result in a serious breakdown, causing bodily injury or death. Transporting When traveling on public roads, use accessory lights, SMV signs, clean reflectors, and other adequate devices to warn operators in other vehicles of your presence. Always comply with all federal, state, and local laws. 1.
Incorporates herbicides Pre-plant herbicides can be incorporated as deeply or shallow as desired. Covers Broadcast Seed Wheat pasture and cover crops can be planted inexpensively by spreading the seed with a fertilizer spreader and covering it with the harrow.
Now that you’re prepared and well briefed, you may begin harrowing. You will need to maintain a 7 to 10 MPH ground speed to shatter residue. Make a tractor gear and range selection that will enable you to maintain these speed combinations. Avoid crossing the face of steep slopes and sharp drops. Cross diagonally through dips to prevent hanging up the tractor and harrow. When turning, use slower speeds and make wide turns when possible.
Maintenance Proper servicing and adjustment is the key to the long life of any implement. With careful inspection and routine maintenance, you can avoid costly downtime and repair. The parts on your Spike Tooth Harrow have been specially designed for the harrow and should be replaced with genuine Nortrac parts only. Do not alter the harrow in a way which will adversely affect its performance.
Spike Tooth Replacement Always secure the harrow in the UP position with solid supports before servicing the underside of the harrow. Never work under equipment supported by hydraulics. Hydraulics can drop equipment if controls are activated or if hydraulic lines burst. Either situation can drop the harrow instantly, even when the power to hydraulics is shut off. NOTE: Always replace spike teeth and locknuts at the same time to ensure that the locknuts will not loosen, allowing the spike teeth to fall off.
The hitch, when not hooked to a tractor, can fall backwards unexpectedly causing bodily injury. When not in use, always store the harrow with the hitch pivoted down onto the harrow frame. Complete these steps for storage: 1. Clean off any dirt and grease that may have accumulated on the harrow and moving parts. 2. Scrape off compacted dirt and then wash surface thoroughly with a garden hose. 3. Check the teeth and locknuts to make sure they are not missing, broken, or excessively worn. 4.
Troubleshooting Use the table below to troubleshoot problems before contacting service personnel or your local dealer. If the problem continues after troubleshooting, call your local dealer for assistance. Failure Possible Cause Corrective Action Bent or broken teeth Hitting solid objects Avoid hitting solid objects. Added weights to the harrow Remove weights.
