The distances listed in "Gigabit Ethernet minimum distance ranges" (page
106) represent the minimum and maximum distances attainable on high
quality fiber. You may be able to run Gigabit Ethernet significantly farther
assuming that the loss budget is not exceeded, and dispersion is well
controlled. Nortel recommends a fiber loss analysis for each run of cable to
determine actual achievable distances (see "Gigabit Ethernet flux budget
and loss characteristics" (page 107)).
