3 Operation
Before operating your DP-3000 Series Dispensing Pump, it may be helpful to familiarize yourself with the
basics of how the pump works. In this section, typical configurations are considered. However,
operational details may vary with the configuration of your system.
Theory of Operation
Operation of the DP-3000 is, for the most part, automatic. Once the pump is up and running, a minimal
amount of operator attention is required. All automated operation of the DP-3000 Series pump is
controlled by Fluidmove software instructions in the dispensing program. Fluidmove software instructions
signal the pneumatic module to supply air pressure to the actuator, forcing the stopcock to open and
close. The DP-3000 dispenses material at a rate dependent upon the motor speed setting, the model,
and the gear configuration. The piston is motor-driven, advancing at a controlled, constant volumetric
rate. You control the amount of fluid dispensed setting the valve-on time within the Fluidmove software. If
you are using a dispensing system equipped with Mass Flow Control, the dispensing system
automatically adjusts the valve-on time (or line speed) to dispense the specified amount of fluid.
When the system identifies a Refill Valve command, air from the pneumatic line activates the linkage,
which opens the stopcock to the Refill position. As the piston draws upward, the air pressure forces fluid
into the pumping chamber. When the piston reaches the Refill position, the stopcock closes to the
dispensing position, and the piston moves downward, forcing fluid out of the pump and beginning the
dispensing process. This method of fluid dispensing is called piston positive displacement.
Before beginning a dispensing process, you will manually instruct the pump to perform a Refill, Prime,
and Purge. These commands, along with a sample dispensing process, are described in “Using the DP-
3000” later in this section. When programming dispensing patterns with the DP-3000, it is essential to be
aware of how much fluid is being dispensed and how much fluid the pumping chamber is capable of
containing. See “Automatic Refill,” later in this section.
" NOTE The DP-3000 Series pumping chamber refills automatically at the beginning and end of
each dispensing run, but does NOT automatically refill during a dispensing run. You
must manually insert the Refill Valve command into the dispensing program to instruct
the system to refill while executing a dispensing pattern.
