Component Description 3-39
3.12.2.2 Flexible Impingement Heaters
An impingement heater (Figure 3-25) is magnetically attached to the top of a lift table making its position
flexible according to the nature of the workpiece. Fixed and or adjustable lift rails maintain the required
distance between the workpiece and the heater top plate. The heater is connected to power and air
supplies using quick-disconnect fittings.
Impingement heaters use convection as the heat transfer method by blowing hot air onto the workpiece
from below. This non-contact type of heating is best used with double-sided printed circuit board (PCB)
assemblies and boards populated with through-hole components. This heating method is typically
combined with mechanical devices that hold the workpiece in place. With this type of heater, heat transfer
is uniform over the entire area subjected to the impingement air. Impingement heaters are more versatile
than contact heaters when workpieces being processed have different bottom board component
configurations but the same standard board width. A single impingement tool design might be applicable
for all of the substrates.
