1. Introduction 1 INTRODUCTION THANK YOU! ABOUT THE USER MANUAL Thank you for choosing the Nord Piano 4. This instrument has been designed to present the most uncompromising piano playing experience possible in a stage keyboard, without sacrificing ease of use or portability. A triple sensor key bed coupled with our Virtual Hammer Action Technology provides an unprecedented level of realism and control and enables a wide range of pianistic playing techniques.

GETTING STARTED 3 GETTING STARTED Let’s spend a few minutes getting acquainted with the most fundamental features of the Nord Piano 4, and go through some of the most common tasks and scenarios in a stepwise fashion. THE SHIFT BUTTON Many panel controls on the Nord Piano 4 have a secondary function, which is printed immediately below it. These additional functions are accessed by pressing and holding SHIFT while operating the control.
| Nord Piano 4 User Manual OS v1.0x LIST VIEW Any dial that has LIST written below it - such as the Program dial - can be used to access a useful list view. 2 Memory Protect is the first setting of the System menu. If the display shows a different setting, use on-screen soft buttons to navigate to the Memory Protect setting. 3 4 Change this setting to Off by turning the PROGRAM dial. This setting, like most other System settings, will be permanently stored until it is changed again.
3. GETTING STARTED ACTIVATE EFFECTS 1 2 3 Make sure the first program (Royal Grand 3D) is selected. 4 5 Activate the delay effect by pressing the DELAY ON/OFF button. Activate the reverb by pressing the Reverb ON button. Adjust the DRY/WET balance with the knob above the reverb selector. The LEDs above the button indicate which sound engine is routed to the effect; PIANO or SYNTH. Press SHIFT and the Delay SOURCE button so that the PIANO LED is lit, if it is not already.

MM When you download piano instruments with the Nord Sound Manager, these will always automatically be placed into their corresponding category. A program “knows” which piano to use by referencing to the category and the model number. If a program references a piano that isn’t currently downloaded onto the Nord Piano 4, the display will read “Piano not found”.

| Nord Piano 4 User Manual OS v1.0x SOSTENUTO When the Sostenuto (middle) pedal is operated, notes held at the moment the pedal is pressed down will be sustained, while succeeding notes will not. SOFT PEDAL To the left is the soft pedal, also known as the Una Corda. With this pedal pressed, all played notes will be slightly lower in volume and also have a more subdued tone quality.

MM To cancel an ongoing Store operation, press EXIT. 3 When a suitable location has been selected, press STORE again to confirm the operation. Pressing the Width (PROGRAM 2) soft button allows for adjusting the width, or "cross-fade" range of the split point. There are three different settings, selectable by turning the dial: KEYBOARD SPLIT Split Width C4 Pos Lrg Width Off: With the Off setting there is no cross-fade between sounds.
5. Program • A “num” symbol in the top right corner of the display indicates that Numeric Pad navigation is active. The ORGANIZE (Shift + Program 4) view allows for moving or "swapping" programs within the program banks.
| Nord Piano 4 User Manual OS v1.0x 6 SAMPLE SYNTH LIST VIEW Pressing SHIFT while turning the SAMPLE SELECT dial allows for browsing all samples in a list. The default sort order is numerical, but samples can also be browsed by category, by activating the Cat soft button. The 3 and 4 soft buttons can be used for quickly jumping between categories. .
7. Effects 7 EFFECTS ACTIVATING EFFECTS To enable an effect, press its ON/OFF button. The LEDs above the button indicate which sound engine the effect is assigned to; PIANO or SYNTH. Press SOURCE (Shift + On/Off) to change the sound engine assignment. Source can also be changed by double-clicking the Source button. EFFECT 1 The EFFECT 1 unit offers six different types of modulation effects. Use its Selector button to switch between the available settings.
| Nord Piano 4 User Manual OS v1.0x EFFECT 2 EQUALIZER EFFECT 2 provides a selection of modulation effects, including two types of Phaser, a Flanger, two Chorus types and a Vibe effect. Each effect has its rate controlled by the Effect 2 knob. The 3-band equalizer features bass, sweepable midrange and treble controls. The BASS frequency is 100 Hz, the TREBLE frequency is 4 kHz and the MID frequency can be set between 200 Hz to 8 kHz, using its FREQ knob. The boost/cut range is +/- 15 dB.
7. Effects REVERB The REVERB unit simulates the natural sound reflections in various acoustic environments. The Reverb is a “global” effect, which is to say that it will always be applied to all active sound engines. The HALL reverb has the response and character of a spacious hall, with a long decay. The STAGE reverb has a medium decay time while the ROOM reverb is a smaller ambience with a short decay time.
| Nord Piano 4 User Manual OS v1.0x 8 MIDI • If a Control/Expression pedal is connected to the Control Pedal Input, MIDI FUNCTIONS The Nord Piano 4 can be used as a master keyboard to control other hardware units or software sound sources, and it is also possible to control the Nord Piano 4 from a separate keyboard or MIDI device. this is transmitted and received as Controller 11 (Expression).

NORD SOUND MANAGER 9 NORD SOUND MANAGER ABOUT NORD SOUND MANAGER SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Nord Sound Manager is an essential application for any owner of a Nord instrument, which allows for organizing, altering and backing up content within the various memory areas on the Nord Piano 4. These are some of the common tasks performed through the Nord Sound Manager: Mac OS X 10.6 or later Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10.
| Nord Piano 4 User Manual OS v1.0x 10 MENUS Any settings that are made in the System, Sound and MIDI menus will take immediate effect, and will be stored until they are changed again. MM The Local Control MIDI setting is an exception and will always revert to “On” when the Nord Piano 4 is powered up. Enter a menu by holding SHIFT and pressing SYSTEM, SOUND or MIDI (Program buttons 1, 2 and 3).
10. Menus MM Local always defaults back to “On” every time the Nord Piano 4 is powered on 2 - MIDI CHANNEL This sets the transmitting and receiving MIDI channel for the Nord Piano 4. This MIDI channel transmits all keyboard, pedal and panel actions as MIDI signals. It can also be used as a receiving channel with full control of the entire Piano 4.
| Nord Piano 4 User Manual OS v1.0x 11 CONNECTIONS AUDIO CONNECTIONS USB CONNECTION General guide on audio connections: Before turning on your amplifier, make all audio connections. Always turn on the amplifier last, and when shutting down, always turn off your amplifier or active speakers first. The USB port is used for connecting the Nord Piano 4 to a computer.
