EXTERN PARAMETERS
Extern parameters are selected by the parameter button, and their value
is controlled by the VALUE encoder.
The Value encoder can be Morph controlled - read more on page
25.
The following parameters can be selected using the parameter button:
VOLUME
If VOLUME is activated, the Value encoder will send MIDI Volume CC7
messages (0-127). This allows for controlling the volume level of the
external device. The external unit must be set to receive MIDI CC mes-
sages for this to work as expected.
PROGRAM
The PROGRAM option allows the Value encoder to send Program
Change messages (0-127), allowing you to select programs in the
external instrument. This function behaves slightly differently than the
other parameters. The Parameter encoder will in this mode send a
Program Change message for each individual rotary encoder LED. To
access all 127 messages, simply continue to turn the encoder multiple
times - it will continue to send messages across the whole range. The
external instrument may have to be set to receive MIDI Program Change
messages for this to work as expected.
E The Stage 3 itself can transmit MIDI Program Change when you
select a Bank, Page and Program. If this occurs on the same MIDI
channel, it can lead to unwanted results on the external units. Make
sure that the Panel A and Panel B MIDI channels are not the same
as the Extern MIDI channel. The specific setting for the “internal”
Stage 3 Program Change in the MIDI Menu can also be turned off.
If the external instrument organizes programs in Banks, there is an
option to send Bank Change messages on the Extern Menu page, see
page 56.
MIDI CC
The MIDI CC setting makes it possible to transmit MIDI Control Change
messages to control a parameter of your choice on the external instru-
ment. The Value encoder will control the value of the sent CC message.
First, the controller number to transmit needs to be defined within the
Extern Menu:
1 Hold SHIFT and press the EXTERN button to access the Extern
menu.
2 Use the PAGE 3/4 buttons to select the Extern Settings “Ctrl/
Value” menu page.
3 Use the PROGRAM Dial to select a MIDI CC Number (0-119). Refer
to the manual for the external unit to see which parameters are
assigned to which CC numbers.
4 To determine the initial value for the selected MIDI CC parameter
when the program is loaded, press the Value soft button and
select a value using the dial. Press the Ctrl soft button to return to
setting the MIDI CC number.
5 Press EXIT (Shift) to leave the menu.
Once again, the external instrument may have to be set to receive MIDI
CC messages for this to work as expected.
SEND ON LOAD
Often it will be desirable to send certain MIDI data instantly when a
program is loaded on the Nord Stage 3. This allows for an external unit
to switch program, or have a CC value reset synchronized with program
changes on the Nord Stage 3. There are individual settings - On or Off -
for Program Change (PC), Volume (Vol) and user defined CC messages
(UsrCC) accessible through the Send On Load page within the Extern
menu.
EXTERN SECTION AND MIDI SOFT THRU
When an external device transmits MIDI notes to the Stage 3 and the
Extern section is active, incoming MIDI notes can be re-routed to the
MIDI Output of the Stage 3, on the MIDI channel that is set for the
Extern section.
This allows you to control one external device from another external
device. The incoming notes must be on the same MIDI channels as set
in the Stage 3 for the Panel A or Panel B MIDI channel, or the Global
MIDI channel setting.
The Extern menu setting Soft Thru must in these cases be set to
“On”.
OTHER EXTERN MENU SETTINGS
There are several other menu settings for the Extern section, that have
not been covered in this section. Refer to the Menu chapter, on page
56, for further information on those.
