STEP 1: Measuring and marking First, have your child measure and mark the end of the pine board to make a 6” x 5-1/2” rectangle and carefully cut out the square using a hand saw. This piece will be part of the roof.

STEP 5: Drilling The front piece Mark 4” up the middle of one of the 7-1/2” boards and drill a hole with the 1-1/2" spade bit around the mark. Then drill a 1/4” hole below the 1-1/2” hole. STEP 6: Assembling the birdhouse Nail the two 7-1/2” boards to the two 4-1/4” boards to create the sides of the house.

STEP 7: Attach the base and roof Nail the sides of the house to the base 5-1/2” x 5-1/2” board. Then nail the two remaining boards to the rest of the house to create the roof. STEP 8: cut the spindle and sand Mark 3” up on the spindle and cut with the hand saw. Insert the spindle piece into the 1/4” hole. You can use wood glue to hold it in place if needed. Then sand the house until its smooth.
