Avoid touching electronic components while changing the covers. Always store and use the device with the covers attached.
Get started Insert and remove the memory card 1 2 Use only compatible microSD cards approved by Nokia for use with this device. Nokia uses approved industry standards for memory cards, but some brands may not be fully compatible with this device. Incompatible cards may damage the card and the device and corrupt data stored on the card. Your device supports microSD cards with a capacity of up to 8 GB. The size of a single file must not exceed 2 GB.
Get started Charge the battery Your battery has been partially charged at the factory. If the device indicates a low charge, do the following: 1 Connect the charger to a wall outlet. You do not need to charge the battery for a specific length of time, and you can use the device while it is charging. If the battery is completely discharged, it may take several minutes before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be made.

About your device The wireless device described in this guide is approved for use on the GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz networks. Contact your service provider for more information about networks. Your device may have preinstalled bookmarks and links for third-party internet sites and may allow you to access third-party sites.
Switch it on networks. Your service provider can explain what charges will apply. Your service provider may have requested that certain features be disabled or not activated in your device. If so, these features will not appear on your device menu. Your device may also have customized items such as menu names, menu order, and icons. • • • Access codes To set how your phone uses the access codes and security settings, select Menu > Settings > Security > Access codes.

Standby mode When the phone is ready for use, and you have not entered any characters, the phone is in the standby mode. Display Switch on and off Press and hold the power key. Set the time and date If requested, enter the date, the local time, and the time zone and the daylight saving time of your location.

Select Menu > Settings > Display > Home screen. Activate the home screen Select Home screen mode.
Switch it on Indicators The currently active profile is timed. A headset is connected to the device. The device is connected to another device using a USB data cable. You have unread messages. You have unsent, cancelled, or failed messages. The keypad is locked. / / / 14 The device does not ring for incoming calls or text messages. An alarm is set. The device is registered to the GPRS or EGPRS network. A GPRS or EGPRS connection is open. The GPRS or EGPRS connection is suspended (on hold).
Switch it on item to be moved, and select Move. Scroll to where you want to move the menu item, and select OK. To save the change, select Done > Yes. Lock the keys Lock the keypad to prevent accidental keypresses. Lock the keypad Select Menu, and press * within 3.5 seconds. Unlock the keypad Select Unlock, and press * within 1.5 seconds. If requested, enter the lock code. Answer a call when the keypad is locked Press the call key. When you end or reject a call, the keypad locks automatically.
Support and updates Warning: With the Flight profile you cannot make or receive any calls, including emergency calls, or use other features that require network coverage. To make calls, you must first activate the phone function by changing profiles. If the device has been locked, enter the lock code.

Support and updates Software updates over the air Your service provider may send phone software updates over the air directly to your phone (network service). This option may not be available, depending on your phone. Downloading software updates may involve the transmission of large amounts of data (network service). Make sure that the device battery has enough power, or connect the charger before starting the update.
Make it your device Restore settings only — Reset all preference settings without deleting any personal data. Restore all — Reset all preference settings and delete all personal data, such as contacts, messages, media files, and activation keys. 19 Make it your device Set up your device, personalise it, and connect it in several ways. Basic settings Phone settings Select Menu > Settings and Phone.
Make it your device Flight query — Set the device to prompt for the Flight profile when you switch the device on. In the Flight profile, all radio connections are closed. Phone updates — Allow software updates from your service provider (network service). The available options may vary. Operator selection — Manually select which network to use. Help text activation — Set the device to display help text. Start-up tone — Play a tone when you switch the device on.
Make it your device 21 Access codes — Change the security code, PIN code, UPIN code, PIN2 code, or barring password. PIN2 code request — Set the device to request the PIN2 code when using a specific device feature protected by the PIN2 code. Some SIM cards do not allow the code request to be deactivated. This option may not be available depending on your SIM card. For details, contact your service provider. Code in use — Display and select the type of PIN code to be used.
Make it your device Tones You can change the tone settings of the selected active profile. Select Menu > Settings > Tones. You can find the same settings in the Profiles menu. Lights To activate or deactivate light effects associated with different phone functions, select Menu > Settings > Lights.
Make it your device Organise — to rearrange the functions Select Menu > Settings and Phone. Other shortcuts Select Menu > Settings > My shortcuts and from the following: Set the language Select Language settings > Phone language and the language.
Make it your device Connect Your phone provides several features to connect to other devices to transmit and receive data. Bluetooth wireless technology Bluetooth technology allows you to connect your device, using radio waves, to a compatible Bluetooth device within 10 metres (32 feet). This device is compliant with Bluetooth Specification 2.
Make it your device 6 7 Scroll to a found device, and select Add. Enter a passcode (up to 16 characters) on your device, and allow the connection on the other Bluetooth device. Operating the device in hidden mode is a safer way to avoid malicious software. Do not accept Bluetooth connectivity from sources you do not trust. Alternatively, switch off the Bluetooth function. This does not affect other functions of the device.
Make it your device PC Suite — to use the cable for Nokia PC Suite Printing & media — to use the phone with a PictBridge compatible printer or with a compatible PC Data storage — to connect to a PC that does not have Nokia software and use the phone as data storage To change the USB mode, select Menu > Settings > Connectivity > USB data cable and the desired USB mode.
Make it your device To install PC Suite on your PC do the following: 1 2 3 4 Connect your device to your PC, using a compatible USB data cable. Select Data storage as the USB mode on your device. Your device appears as removable disk in your PC. If the installation does not start automatically, select the memory card of your device on your PC and execute the PC-Suite installation file. Follow the instructions of the installation program on your PC.
Make it your device To view the information on the 10 most recent privacy notifications and requests, select Menu > Log > Positioning > Position log. Info messages, SIM messages, and service commands Info messages You can receive messages on various topics from your service provider (network service). For more information, contact your service provider. Select Menu > Messaging > Info messages and from the available options.
Stay in touch Device manager sett. — Allow or prevent the device from receiving software updates. This option may not be available, depending on your device. Personal config. sett. — Add manually new personal accounts for various services, and activate or delete them. To add a new personal account, select Add or Options > Add new. Select the service type, and enter the required parameters. To activate a personal account, scroll to the account, and select Options > Activate.
Stay in touch Handle voice calls To handle calls with the slide, select Menu > Settings > Call > Slide call handling. Answer an incoming call Press the call key, or open the slide. End a call Press the end key, or close the slide. Mute the ringing tone Select Silence. Reject an incoming call Press the end key. Adjust the volume in a call Use the volume keys. Dialling shortcuts Assign a phone number to one of the number keys, 2-9. See "Assign dialling shortcuts", p. 23.
Stay in touch Options during a call Many of the options that you can use during a call are network services. For availability, contact your service provider. During a call, select Options and from the available options.
Stay in touch Automatic redial — The device redials the number automatically if a call fails. The device tries to call the number 10 times. Voice clarity — Improve speech intelligibility, especially in noisy environments. Speed dialling — Dial the names and phone numbers assigned to the number keys (2-9) by pressing and holding the corresponding number key. Call waiting — The network notifies you of an incoming call while you have a call in progress (network service).
Stay in touch To set the writing language, select Options > Writing language. If the next letter you want is located on the same key as the present one, wait until the cursor appears, and enter the letter. Predictive text input Predictive text input is based on a builtin dictionary to which you can also add new words. 1 2 Start writing a word, using the keys 2 to 9. Stay in touch may charge accordingly. Characters with accents, other marks, or some language options take more space, and limit the number of characters that can be sent in a single message. The total number of characters left and the number of messages needed for sending are displayed. To send messages, the correct message centre number must be stored in your device. Normally, this number is set by default through your SIM card.
Stay in touch The message type is indicated at the top of the display and changes automatically depending on the content of the message. Service providers may charge differently depending on the message type. For details, contact your service provider. Conversations and Inbox view In Conversations, you can view your received messages together with related messages and replies you have sent. You can switch to the traditional Inbox view to list your received messages one by one. Select Menu > Messaging.
Stay in touch message remains in the Outbox folder. To cancel message sending, in the Outbox folder, select Options > Cancel sending. To save the sent messages in the Sent items folder, select Menu > Messaging > Message settings > General settings > Save sent messages. The phone saves received messages in the Inbox folder. Organise your messages in the Saved items folder. To add, rename, or delete a folder, select Menu > Messaging > Saved items > Options.
Stay in touch of multimedia messages, allow the reception of multimedia messages and advertisements, and set up other preferences related to multimedia messages. E-mail messages — Allow e-mail reception, set the image size in e-mail, and set up other preferences related to e-mail. Service messages — Activate service messages, and set up preferences related to service messages.
Stay in touch Create a new Nokia account To create a Nokia account, which includes mail and IM services, using your PC, visit www.ovi.com. To create an account using your device, do the following: 1 2 Select Menu > Messaging > Email message. Follow the instructions on the display. Use IM services simultaneously 1 To return to the IM main view, select Home from within any IM service. 2 Select an IM service, and sign in. 3 To switch between IM services, in the contacts list view, scroll left or right.
Stay in touch 2 Select a notification type and Save. Leave the IM application When you exit the Instant messaging (IM) application, you remain signed in to IM services. Your sessions remain active for a period of time, according to your service subscription. When the IM application is running in the background, you can open other applications, and return to using IM without signing in again. Close the IM window Go to the IM main view, and select Exit. Sign out from IM Select Options > Sign Out.
Stay in touch service and start sending and receiving mail. You can also use the account to sign into other Ovi services, such as IM. For more information, see www.ovi.com. Read, create, and send mail Select Menu > Messaging > E-mail message and a mail account. Read mail and reply 1 Select a mail and Open. 2 Use the scroll key to see the entire mail. 3 To reply to or forward a mail, select Options.
Stay in touch availability, pricing, and instructions, contact your service provider. The menus may vary depending on your IM service provider. To connect to the service, select Menu > Messaging > IMs, and follow the instructions. E-mail Access your POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail account with your phone to read, write, and send e-mail. This e-mail application is different from the SMS e-mail function. Before you can use e-mail, you must have an e-mail account and the correct settings.
2 3 4 Stay in touch Messaging and your e-mail account. To download an e-mail and its attachments, select the e-mail and Open or Retrieve. To reply to or forward the e-mail, select Options and from the available options. To disconnect from your e-mail account, select Options > Disconnect. The connection to the e-mail account automatically ends after some time without activity.
Image and video Image and video Capture images Activate the camera Press the capture key; or, if in video mode, scroll left or right. Zoom in or out In image mode, scroll up and down, or use the volume keys. Capture an image Press the capture key. Images are saved in Gallery. Display images after capture Select Options > Settings > Photo preview time and the preview time. End the image preview manually Select Back. Your device supports an image capture resolution of up to 1536x2048 pixels. © 2009 Nokia.
Image and video Landscape format or Portrait format — Select the orientation of the camera. Settings — Modify other camera and video settings, and select where to save images and video clips. images inside the album are not deleted from the memory. Gallery Manage images, video clips, music files, themes, graphics, tones, recordings, and received files. These files are stored in the device memory or on a memory card and may be arranged in folders.
Image and video Music and videos Your device includes a media player for playing songs and video clips. Music and video files stored in the music folder in the device memory or on the memory card are automatically detected and added to the video or music library. Select Menu > Gallery and Music & videos. Select from the following: Videos — List all available video clips. All songs — List all available songs. You can sort songs by artist, album, or genre, for example.
Entertainment If your memory card has not been preformatted, you need to format it. When you format a memory card, all data on the card is permanently deleted. Format the memory card Select Options > Mem. card options > Format memory card > Yes. When formatting is complete, enter a name for the memory card. Protect the memory card with a password Select Options > Mem. card options > Set password.
Entertainment Play a media file Select a file from the available folders and Play. 3 Download files from the web Select Options > Downloads and a download site. Play songs Update the music library after adding files Select Options > Update library. Create a playlist 1 Select Playlists > Create playlist, and enter the name of the playlist. 2 Add music or video clips from the displayed lists. 3 To store the playlist, select Done.
Entertainment Switch to the current playlist . Select • Leave the media player playing in the background Press the end key. Stop the media player Press and hold the end key. • Change the media player look Your device provides several themes to change the look of the media player. Select Menu > Media > Media player and Go to Media player > Options > Settings > Media player theme and the desired theme. The virtual keys may change depending on the theme.
Entertainment Tune in to radio stations Operate the radio Use the scroll key according to the virtual keys on the display. Alternatively, use the music keys , , and . Search for the next available station Press and hold the scroll key left or right. Alternatively, press and hold the or music key. Tune the radio frequency in 0.05 MHz steps Briefly press the scroll key left or right. Save a station to a memory location Select Options > Save station.
Entertainment Radio settings Select Menu > Radio. Select Options > Settings and from the following: RDS — Display information from the radio data system, such as the name of the station. Auto-frequency — Allow the device to automatically switch to a frequency with better reception (available when RDS is activated). Play via — Listen using the headset or the loudspeaker. Output — Switch between stereo and mono output. Radio theme — Select the look of the radio.
Entertainment Create a new equaliser set 1 Select one of the last two sets in the list and Options > Edit. 2 Use the scroll key to adjust the sound controls. 3 To save the settings and enter a name for the set, select Save and Options > Rename. Stereo widening Stereo widening creates a wider stereo sound effect when you are using a stereo headset. Select Menu > Media and Stereo widening. Web You can access various internet services with your device browser (network service).

Web uploads Open the web page of your online sharing service to view uploaded images and videos and to change settings (network service). Open an online sharing service 1 Select Menu > Internet > Web uploads and an online sharing service. 2 Select from the links offered by the service. Entertainment browsing, select Options > Settings > Security > Cookies. Browser security Security features may be required for some services, such as banking services or online shopping. For such connections you need security certificates and possibly a security module, which may be available on your SIM card. For more information, contact your service provider. 53 Certificates have a restricted lifetime.
Entertainment Other available options may include the following: Update version — to verify that a new version of the application is available for download from the web (network service) Web page — to provide further information or additional data for the application from an internet page (network service), if available Application access — to restrict the application from accessing the network • the list of available bookmarks is shown.
Maps Maps You can browse maps for different cities and countries, search for addresses and points of interest, plan routes from one location to another, save locations as landmarks, and send them to compatible devices. Almost all digital cartography is inaccurate and incomplete to some extent. Never rely solely on the cartography that you download for use in this device.
Maps ensure that all maps are from the same release. Download maps automatically Select Menu > Organiser > Maps and Settings > Network settings > Allow network usage > Yes or In home network. Deactivate automatic download Select No. Note: Downloading content such as maps, satellite images, voice files, guides or traffic information may involve transmission of large amounts of data (network service). Maps and GPS Your device does not have an internal GPS antenna.
Maps the GPS receiver and cellular radio networks for positioning or navigation. Extra services You can upgrade Maps to a full navigation system to be used by car and by foot. You need a regional licence for the full navigation system. The car navigation is fully voice-guided with two- and three-dimensional map views. The pedestrian navigation is limited to a speed of 30 km/h (18.6 miles/h) and provides no voice guidance. The navigation service is not available for all countries and regions.
Organise Organise Handle contacts Let your phone help you to organise your life. Search for a contact Select Menu > Contacts > Names. Scroll through the list of contacts, or enter the first characters of the contact's name. Manage contacts Save names, phone numbers, and addresses as contacts in the device and on the SIM card. Select Menu > Contacts. Select the memory for contacts The device memory can save contacts with additional details, such as various phone numbers and text items.
Organise Copy or move contacts between the device and SIM card memories Copy single contacts Select Options > Marking options > Mark. Mark the contacts you want to copy or move, and select Options > Copy marked or Move marked. Copy all contacts Select Menu > Contacts > Copy contacts or Move contacts. Create a contact group Arrange contacts into caller groups with different ringing tones and group images. 1 2 3 4 Select Menu > Contacts > Groups. Select Add or Options > Add new group to create a new group.
Organise Alarm clock To sound an alarm at a desired time. Set the alarm 1 Select Menu > Organiser > Alarm clock. 2 Activate the alarm, and enter the alarm time. 3 To repeat the alarm on selected days of the week, select Repeat: > On and the days. 4 Select the alarm tone. 5 Define the snooze time-out period, and select Save. Stop the alarm To stop the sounding alarm, select Stop. If you let the alarm sound for a minute or select Snooze, the alarm stops for the snooze time-out period, then resumes.
Organise Notes To write and send notes, select Menu > Organiser > Notes. To make a note if no note is added, select Add; otherwise, select Options > Make a note. Write the note, and select Save. Calculator Your phone provides a standard, a scientific, and a loan calculator. Select Menu > Organiser > Calculator and, from the available options, the calculator type and the operating instructions. This calculator has limited accuracy and is designed for simple calculations.

This device uses various types of DRM software to access DRMprotected content. With this device you can access content protected with WMDRM 10, OMA DRM 1.0, OMA DRM 1.0 forward lock, and OMA DRM 2.0.
Battery For availability of approved accessories, please check with your dealer. When you disconnect the power cord of any accessory, grasp and pull the plug, not the cord. Battery Battery and charger information Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The battery intended for use with this device is BL-4CT.
