SAFETY ■ About your device The wireless device with the type designator RM-717 described in this guide is approved for use on the GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 networks. The model number for this device is X2-01. When using this device, obey all laws and respect local customs, privacy and legitimate rights of others, including copyrights. Copyright protection may prevent some images, music, and other content from being copied, modified, or transferred.
SAFETY network support such as support for specific technologies like WAP 2.0 protocols (HTTP and SSL) that run on TCP/IP protocols and language-dependent characters. Your service provider may have requested that certain features be disabled or not activated in your device. If so, these features will not appear on your device menu. Your device may also have customized items such as menu names, menu order, and icons.
SAFETY The module PIN is required to access the information in the security module of your SIM card. The signing PIN may be required for the digital signature. The restrictions password is required when using the call restriction service. To define how your device uses the access codes and security settings, select Menu > Settings > Security. ■ Accessories, batteries, and chargers Check the model number of any charger before use with this device.
Get started 1. Get started ■ Insert SIM card and battery Always switch the device off and disconnect the charger before removing the battery. This device is intended for use with the BL-5C battery. Always use original Nokia batteries. See "Nokia battery authentication guidelines”, p. 63. The SIM card and its contacts can easily be damaged by scratches or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card. 1. Remove the back cover (1,). 2. Remove the battery and insert the SIM card (2).
Get started ■ Insert a microSD card Use only compatible microSD cards approved by Nokia for use with this device. Nokia uses approved industry standards for memory cards, but some brands may not be fully compatible with this device. Incompatible cards may damage the card and the device and corrupt data stored on the card. Your device supports microSD cards with a capacity of up to 8 GB. A compatible memory card may be supplied with the device, and may already be inserted in the device.
Get started ■ Remove the microSD card You can remove or replace the memory card without switching the device off, but make sure that no application is currently accessing the memory card. ■ Charge the battery Your battery has been partially charged at the factory. If the device indicates a low charge, do the following: 1. Connect the charger to a wall socket. 2. Connect the charger to the device. 3. When the device indicates a full charge, disconnect the charger from the device, then from the wall outlet.
Get started ■ Connect a headset You can connect a Nokia universal 3.5 mm headset to your device. ■ Wrist strap Insert a thread through the wrist strap hole. Place the thread around the post. Tighten the thread. ■ Antenna Your device may have internal and external antennas. Avoid touching the antenna area unnecessarily while the antenna is transmitting or receiving.

Turn the volume up or down To adjust the volume of the earpiece or media player, press the scroll key up or down during a call. Set the time, time zone, and date Enter the local time, select the time zone of your location in terms of the time difference with respect to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), and enter the date.

To activate the enhanced home screen, select Menu > Settings > Display > Home screen > Home screen mode and set to On or Off. The default selection is On. 2. Select Personalize view. 3. Scroll to the desired content section, and select Change or Assign. Add contacts to Favorite contacts You can easily communicate with your family and friends.
Your device ■ Lock or unlock the keypad (keyguard) Select Menu or Unlock, and press the Function key within 1.5 seconds to lock or unlock the keypad. To activate the automatic keyguard, select Menu > Settings > Phone > Automatic keyguard. The default is set to On. To answer a call when the keyguard is activated, press the call key. When you end or reject the call, the keypad automatically locks.
Call functions To make an emergency call, some networks may require that a valid SIM card is properly inserted in the device. 3. Call functions ■ Make a voice call 1. Enter the phone number, including the area code. For international calls, press * twice for the international prefix (the + character replaces the international access code), enter the country code, the area code without the leading 0, if necessary, and the phone number. 2. To call the number, press the call key. 3.
Navigate the menus Vanity dialing You can dial an alphanumeric phone number (using numbers and letters). For example, 888-NOKIA-2U. Enter the numbers located in the center of the keypad. To enter letters, press and hold the function key (at the bottom left of the keypad) and press the letters you want to dial. The phone automatically dials the corresponding numbers for the letters entered. 4. Navigate the menus The device functions are grouped into menus. To access the main menu, select Menu.
Music ■ Play songs 1. Select Menu > Music > My music > Go to Media player. The details of the first song on the default playlist are displayed. 2. To play a song, scroll to the song, and select 3. To skip to the beginning of the next song, select the previous song, select once. . . To skip to the beginning of 4. To rewind the current song, select and hold . Music ■ Settings To modify settings, select Menu > Music > My music > Go to Media player > Options > Settings and from the following: Shuffle — Play songs in a random order. Repeat — Repeat the current song, all songs, or deactivate repeat. Equalizer — Open the list of media equalizer sets. Stereo widening — Activate stereo widening. ■ Other options Go to Media menu — Go to the main media menu. Now playing — View the song currently playing. Add to playlist — Add the current song to the favorites playlist.
Music To use the graphical keys , the desired key, and select it. , , or on the display, scroll left or right to Save radio frequencies 1. To start searching for a station, select and hold or frequency in 0.05 MHz steps, briefly select or . . To change the radio 2. To save a frequency to a memory location from 1 to 9, press and hold the corresponding number key. To save a frequency to a memory location from 10 to 20, press briefly 1 or 2, and press and hold the desired number key, 0 to 9. 3.
Contacts You can normally make a call or answer an incoming call while listening to the radio. During the call, the volume of the radio is muted. When an application is sending or receiving data, it may interfere with the radio. 6. Contacts You can save names and phone numbers (contacts) in the phone memory and on the SIM card. The phone memory may save contacts with additional details, such as various phone numbers and text items. You can also save an image for a limited number of contacts.
Contacts ■ Search for a contact Select Menu > Contacts > Names. Scroll through the list of contacts, or enter the first characters of the name you are searching for. Press the call key to call the number. To save details for a contact, search for the contact to which you want to add a detail, and select Details > Options > Add detail. Select from the options available. ■ Edit contacts After you find the contact you want to edit, select Options > Edit to edit a name or number.
Contacts ■ Groups Groups allows you to arrange the names and phone numbers saved in the memory into caller groups with different ringing tones and associated images. To create a group, select Menu > Contacts > More > Groups. Enter the name of the group. Select View to see the members. Select Add to choose contacts from your phone book. ■ 1-touch dialing To assign a number to a 1-touch dialing key, select Menu > Contacts > More > 1-touch dialing and scroll to the 1-touch dialing number.
Settings 7. Settings ■ Activate a profile Your device has various settings groups called profiles, for which you can customize the device tones for different events and environments. Select Menu > Settings > Profiles, and the desired profile. Select from the following: Activate — Activate the selected profile. Customize — Customize the profile. Select the setting you want to change. Timed — Set the profile to be active until a certain time within the next 24 hours.
Settings If you select the highest ringing tone level, the ringing tone reaches its highest level after a few seconds. ■ Display Select Menu > Settings > Display and from the following: Wallpaper — Add a background image in the home screen. Home screen — Personalize home screen content for quick access to features. Home scr. font col. — Select the color for the text in the home screen. Notification details — Display contact information in missed calls and messages received.
Settings ■ My shortcuts In the Home screen, you can quickly access the following menus with the scroll key: • Scroll up or down — Access the Home screen widgets. • Scroll left — Open the alarm clock. • Scroll right — Open the calendar. Personalize shortcuts You can personalize your selection and scroll key settings. Left selection key Select Menu > Settings > My shortcuts > Left selection key and a function.
Settings Create backup — Back up data for storage on an external device. Restore backup — Restore data to your device from an external device. ■ Connectivity Your phone has several features that allow you to connect to other devices to transmit and recieve data. Bluetooth wireless technology This device is compliant with Bluetooth Specification 2.1 + EDR. To ensure interoperability between other devices supporting Bluetooth technology, use Nokia approved accessories for this model.
Settings Conn. to audio acc. — Search for compatible Bluetooth audio devices. Select the device that you want to connect to the device. Paired devices — Search for any Bluetooth device in range. Select New to list any Bluetooth device in range. Select a device, and Pair. Enter an agreed Bluetooth passcode of the device (up to 16 characters) to associate (pair) the device to your device. You must only give this passcode when you connect to the device for the first time.
Settings USB data cable Use a compatible USB data cable to connect your device to your PC, to print or store data using Nokia Ovi Suite. ■ Call settings Select Menu > Settings > Call and from the following: Call forwarding — Forward your incoming calls (network service). You may not be able to forward your calls if some call restriction functions are active. See Call restrictions in "Security”, p. 37.
Settings ■ Phone Select Menu > Settings > Phone and from the following: Language settings — To set the display language of your device, select Phone language. To set the language according to the information on the SIM card, select Automatic. Memory status — View the amount of used and available device memory. Automatic keyguard — Set the keypad of your device to lock automatically after a preset time delay when the device is in the home screen and no function of the device has been used.
Settings Charger — To turn the lights on permanently, select Charger. To trun the lights on for 15 seconds after a keypress, select Automatic. Hearing aid > T-coil hearing aid mode — To optimize the sound quality when using a t-coil hearing aid. is shown when the T-coil hearing aid mode is active. Connect to a TTY device Your phone uses the HDA-12 TTY phone adapter to connect to a TTY device. 1. Connect the HDA-12 phone adapter to the headset connector on your phone. 2.
Settings Select Menu > Settings > Configuration and from the following: Default configuration settings — View the service providers saved in the device. To set the configuration settings of the service provider as default settings, select Options > Set as default. Activate default in all applications — Activate the default configuration settings for supported applications. Preferred access point — View the saved access points.
Settings PIN2 code request — Select whether the PIN2 code is required when using a specific device feature which is protected by the PIN2 code. Some SIM cards do not allow the code request to be switched off. Call restrictions — Restrict incoming calls to and outgoing calls from your device (network service). A restriction password is required. Fixed dialing — Create a list of allowed phone numbers. When activated, calls and text messages are allowed only to numbers on the list.
Visual Voicemail To restore settings only, select Settings only . To also delete personal data, select All. Enter the security code, or create one, if prompted. The default code is 12345. The names and device numbers saved in the address book, are not deleted. 8. Visual Voicemail Select Menu > Voicemail. With Visual Voicemail, you can listen to your voice mail without calling the voice mail system. You must authorize the Visual Voicemail application to synchronize with your voice mail.

With the phone browser, you can view the services that use wireless markup language (WML) or extensible hypertext markup language (XHTML) on their pages. The appearance may vary due to screen size. You may not be able to view all details web pages. ■ Set up browsing You may receive the configuration settings required for browsing as a configuration message from the service provider.
web2go • To select the last URL, select Menu > web2go > Last web addr. • To enter the address of the service, select Menu > web2go > Go to address. Enter the address of the service, and select OK. ■ Browse pages After you make a connection to the service, you can start browsing. The function of the phone keys may vary in different services. Follow the instructions on the phone display. For more information, contact your service provider.
web2go Your device may have preinstalled bookmarks and links for third-party internet sites. You may also access other third-party sites through your device. Third-party sites are not affiliated with Nokia, and Nokia does not endorse or assume liability for them. If you choose to access such sites, you should take precautions for security or content. Receive a bookmark When you have received a bookmark, 1 bookmark received is displayed. To view the bookmark, select Show.
web2go Scripts over secure connection You can select whether to allow the running of scripts from a secure page. The phone supports WML scripts. Select Menu > web2go > Web settings > Security > WMLScripts > Allow. ■ Cache memory A cache is a memory location that is used to store data temporarily. If you have tried to access or have accessed confidential information requiring passwords, empty the cache after each use. The information or services you have accessed are stored in the cache.
web2go Certificates Important: Even if the use of certificates makes the risks involved in remote connections and software installation considerably smaller, they must be used correctly in order to benefit from increased security. The existence of a certificate does not offer any protection by itself; the certificate manager must contain correct, authentic, or trusted certificates for increased security to be available. Certificates have a restricted lifetime.
Enter text Digital signature You can make digital signatures with your phone if your SIM card has a security module. Using the digital signature can be the same as signing your name to a paper bill, contract, or other document. To make a digital signature, select a link on a page, such as, the title of the book you want to buy and its price. The text to sign, which may include the amount and date, is displayed. Check that the header text is Read and that the digital signature icon displayed.
Enter text • or indicates the character case. To change the character case, press the shift key (the arrow key between the function key and the Sym key). • 1 # * indicates number mode. To switch between letter and number mode, press the Function key. To enter more than one number, lock the number mode by pressing the Function key twice. • To insert symbols, press the Sym key. • To set the language while entering text, select Options > Writing language.
Messaging Select a writing language To select a writing language, select Menu > Messaging > Create message > Options > Writing language and the language you want to use. Select an input method for Chinese Each writing language has one or more input methods available. An input method lets you enter text or characters in a convenient way. To select an input method, first select the desired Writing language.
Messaging into easy to read conversations. This gives you the ability to easily view entire conversations with a single contact in a chat-like interface. You can read, create, send, and save messages. To send the message, select Send. The device saves the message in the Sent folder and sending starts. When sending messages, your device may display the words Message sent. This indicates that the message has been sent by your device to the message center number programed into your device.
Messaging ■ Multimedia messages A multimedia message can contain text, images, and sound or video clips. Only devices that have compatible features can receive and display multimedia messages. The appearance of a message may vary depending on the receiving device. The wireless network may limit the size of MMS messages. If the inserted picture exceeds this limit the device may make it smaller so that it can be sent by MMS.
Messaging Read and reply to a message Important: Exercise caution when opening messages. Messages may contain malicious software or otherwise be harmful to your device or PC. A notification is displayed when you receive a message. To read the message, select View. If more than one message was received, to read a message, open the message from the Conversations folder. To send a reply, select Reply. ■ SIM card messages SIM card messages are text messages that are saved to your SIM card.
Mall ■ Message settings Select Menu > Messaging > Message settings and select from the following: General settings — Save copies of sent messages in your device, overwrite old messages if the message memory becomes full, and set up other preferences related to messages. Text — Define message centers, select the type of character support, and set up other preferences related to text messages.
Apps 13. Apps ■ Alarm clock The alarm clock uses the time format set for the clock. The alarm clock works even when the phone is switched off, if there is enough power in the battery. To set an alarm, select Menu > Apps. > Alarm clock > Alarm time, and enter the alarm time. To change the alarm time when the alarm time is set, select On. To set the phone to alert you on selected days of the week, select Repeat alarm. To set a snooze time-out, select Snooze time-out and the length of time.
Apps ■ Calculator The calculator in your phone provides basic arithmetic and trigonometric functions; calculates the square, the square root, and the inverse of a number; and calculates loan amounts, payments, and interest rates. Select Menu > Apps. > Calculator. Press # for a decimal point. Scroll to the desired operation or function. ■ Gallery In Gallery, you can manage images, video clips, and music files. To view the Gallery contents, select Menu > Apps. > Gallery.
Apps Application options To view application options, select Menu > Apps. > Games & Apps > Collection > Options. Update version — to check if a new version of the application is available for download from web2go (network service) Web page — to get further information or additional data for the application from an internet page (network service), if available Application access — to restrict the application from accessing the network Download an application Your phone supports J2METM Java applications.
Apps ■ Voice recorder You can record speech, sound, or an active call. Use this feature to record notes or phone numbers to enter later. You can also create a ringtone. Record sound 1. Select Menu > Apps. > Voice recorder. 2. To start recording, select . To start recording during a call, select Options > Record. While recording a call, all parties to the call hear a faint beeping sound. When recording a call, hold the phone in the normal position near to your ear. 3. To stop recording, select .
Apps ■ To-do list To save a note for a task that you have to do, select a priority level for the note, and mark it as done when you have completed it. Notes can be sorted by priority or by date. To-do notes 1. Select Menu > Apps. > To-do list. 2. If no note is added, select Add note; otherwise, select Options > Add. 3. Write the note, select the priority, set the deadline and the alarm type for the note, and select Save. 4. To view a note, scroll to it, and select View.
Apps ■ Countdown timer 1. Select Menu > Apps. > Countd. timer. Enter the alarm time in hours, minutes, and seconds, and select OK. You can write your own note text, which is displayed when the time expires. 2. To start the timer, select Start. 3. To change the countdown time, select Change time. 4. To stop the timer, select Stop timer. If the alarm time is reached when the device is in the home screen, the device sounds a tone and flashes the note text (if it is set) or Countdown completed.
Games 14. Games ■ Open a game Your device software includes some games. Select Menu > Games. To set sounds, lights, and shakes for the game, select Menu > Apps > Games and Apps and Options > Application settings. 15. Communities With the Communities application, you can enhance your social networking experience. The application may not be available in all regions.

Photos ■ Capture images and record video clips Your device supports an image capture resolution of 640x480 pixels. Camera mode Use the still image function — Select Menu > Photos > Camera. Zoom in or out — Scroll up or down. Capture an image — Select Capture. Set the preview mode and time — Select Options > Settings > Photo preview time.
My Account View your images and video clips To view your images, select Menu > Photos > My photos . To watch your video clips , select Menu > Photos > My videos . 17. Battery and charger information If a battery is being used for the first time or if the battery has not been used for a prolonged period, it may be necessary to connect the charger, then disconnect and reconnect it to begin charging the battery. If the battery is completely discharged, it may take several minutes before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be made. Safe removal. Always switch the device off and disconnect the charger before removing the battery.
Battery and charger information Do not modify or remanufacture, attempt to insert foreign objects into the battery or immerse or expose it to water or other liquids. Correct use. Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Improper battery use may result in a fire, explosion, or other hazard.
