1. Introduction This Application Memory Card guide includes information on the Application Memory Card for Nokia 9110 and 9110i communicators. On the memory card there are three pre-installed applications: WAP services, Find, and Quick imaging.
5 Close the hatch and replace the battery. Figure 1 IMPORTANT! Keep all memory cards out of small children’s reach. Make sure that the hatch is closed before replacing the battery! Do not remove the memory card in the middle of an operation. Be sure to close all memory card applications before removing the card. If you are installing an application to the memory card and you need to reboot the communicator, do not remove the card until the reboot is complete. Otherwise the application files may be lost.
You can find WAP services under the Internet application. See figure 3. Find and Quick imaging applications can be found under the System application. To view files stored on the memory card, select Open in the Notes application. Press the Menu button to create a new folder, or to copy or move files between the communicator and the memory card. Figure 3 To create a new contacts database on your memory card, press the Menu button in the Contacts application and select New contacts database. See figure 4.
your memory card by selecting Voice recorder in the Extras application. Figure 5 To install new applications directly on the memory card You may wish to install applications on the memory card to save memory space in the communicator. Note: It is highly recommended that you install the WAP services application on the memory card and not into the memory of the communicator.
To backup and restore data using the memory card To make backups of various communicator data to the card, select Backup/ Restore in the System application and choose Settings to change the Connection type to Memory card. Figure 6 Proceed by selecting Backup. Figure 7 To make backups of the data on your memory card to your PC, use the PC Suite for Nokia 9110 Communicator program. Click on the Backup/Restore icon and ensure that the Memory card box is checked. Proceed to backup.
To use the memory card tool To check that the card is ready for use, select Memory card tool in the System application and press Check card. See figure 8. 7 2. WAP services The WAP services application can be used to access Internet services which are based on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). These services can contain news, weather reports, flight times, dictionaries, etc. Note: The content of each service depends on the content provider of that service. To use such a service, follow the instructions provided by the content provider.
Differences between the WWW and WAP services applications The WAP services application is similar to the WWW application in the Nokia 9110 Communicator but there are two significant differences: • The WAP services application uses a data call to access the WAP access points. However, the WAP access points are not the same as the ones defined in the Internet settings of your communicator. For the WAP services to function, you need to define WAP access points.
Figure 2 The WAP access point settings are: Access point name — You can give the access point any name you prefer (max. 30 characters), for example the name of your WAP service provider, so that you are able to separate different access points from each other. Homepage — Write the homepage address to this field. Remember to include all the characters in the address given to you by your service provider. Phone number — The telephone number of the WAP access point.
Bookmarks Press Bookmarks in the application main view to open the Bookmarks list. The name of the WAP access point used for connecting to the bookmark is shown next to the bookmark title. See figure 3. Below the bookmarks list is the address field where you can enter the homepage address of the WAP service page you want to connect to. If you select a bookmark from the list, the address field shows the URL of the bookmark.
Note: Maximum of 50 bookmarks can be stored at one time. To connect to WAP services After you have set a valid WAP access point, you can start using the WAP services by pressing Home in the main view of the WAP services application. See figure 1. You will get a “Connecting to service” note, telling you about the progress of the connection. Note: Depending on the network configuration and load, establishing a connection may take up to one minute or even longer.
Save as document — saves the page content to the Downloaded files folder. Reload — reloads the current address from the network. You will have to start browsing the pages from the beginning. Back — opens the previous page if available. Clear cache— Empties the browser cache, all temporary files, and cookies. About — Shows general information about the browser. To navigate WAP services 1 To establish a connection, press Home or scroll to a bookmark in the Bookmarks list and press Go.
To use the navigation commands WAP service pages have different commands. Here are some of the possible commands which may become available while browsing: Go — Select an active link and press Go to open a new WAP service page. Back — If you have browsed through at least two pages, Back allows you to fetch the previous page. Change — If the selected item is a selection list, press Change to open it.
3. Find With the Find application you are able to search for different kinds of documents and files which have been saved either in the memory of the communicator or on the memory card. Find application is able to search for: • Calendar events, To-do list items and Memos, • contact cards, • short messages, • mail messages, • notes, • faxes, • tones (tunes and .WAV files), • images (.GIF, .JPEG and .UPF files), • WWW bookmarks, and • folder names.
Figure 1 2 Use the arrow keys to scroll to the data type you want to remove from the selection and press Toggle. Note: To allow for the widest possible search, the default setting is that all data types are selected. To remove the selection, press None. To return to the default setting, press All. 3 Press OK to close the window. Note: If the OK button is dimmed, you have not chosen any items. Select an item or press All and then press OK. You can go through the rest of the settings in the similar way.
Location — allows you to choose whether you want to search for the document or file from the communicator’s memory, from the memory card, or both memories. Search text in — you can search for text which appears in the Document name, Document content, Document name or content, or Document name and content. The most restricting search criterion is the last, Document name and content. If you choose this criteria, the text you are searching for must appear in both the document’s name and in its content.
Documents found view After the search has been completed you can see the documents in the Documents found view, see figure 2. You have three options: Press Open to open the file or document. The button is dimmed, if it is not possible to open that file in the Find application. Press Details to view more information about the search result, for example, Name, Type, Directory, Creation date, Modification date, and Size.
To use the Menu button When you press the menu button in the Find application main view, the following options appear: Save search criteria — allows you to save your search criteria for later use in the Find application. Find application creates a Search criteria folder in the Own texts folder. This means that the search criteria can be opened from other applications such as Fax, SMS, Mail and Notes.
4. Quick imaging The Quick imaging application allows you to receive images from a digital camera via an infrared connection and send them as mail attachments. It is also possible to receive images from another communicator, a scanner or a PC, provided that they support the IrTran-P protocol. To define settings 1 Press Settings in the Quick imaging application main view. 2 Press Change, if you want to change the settings. See figure 1.
To receive images and send them as mail attachments, press Receive to mail. Figure 2 Images will be saved either to the communicator Downloaded files folder, or on the memory card, depending on what you have defined in the settings. 5 If you pressed Receive to mail, the mail editor is automatically opened and you can write a mail message. Press Send to open the mail envelope view. If you want to return back to the Quick imaging main view, press Close.
Troubleshooting 1. A connection cannot be established between the digital camera and the communicator. Make sure that the digital camera supports the IrTran-P protocol. You can verify this from the manual of your digital camera. Check that the infrared ports of the camera and the communicator face each other and that the link is unobstructed. Check that you have activated both devices, the camera to send and the communicator to receive images. 2. Images have been received but cannot be found.
5. Care and maintenance Your Nokia 9110i Communicator is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The suggestions below will help you to fulfil any warranty obligations and to enjoy this product for many years. When using your communicator, battery, charger OR any accessory: Keep it and all its parts and accessories out of small children’s reach. Keep it dry. Precipitation, humidity and liquids contain minerals that will corrode electronic circuits.
Important The data on the memory card does not have password protection. When the system is locked, the memory card data can not be accessed until the lock code of the communicator is entered (see the User’s manual). If the card is removed from your communicator and used in another device, the data can be read by any user. As with computer floppy disks, take care of sensitive information. Keep all memory cards out of small children’s reach. Formatting the card will erase all data.
Warranty Nokia warrants the memory card to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of delivery to you as evidenced by a copy of your receipt. This warranty is limited to the original purchaser and is not transferable.
Glossary C Cache Cache is a buffer memory which is used in browsers for storing the most commonly used data temporarily. Using a cache speeds up access to the data. Cookies Cookies are little pieces of information, given by the server to you, to store information about your visits to a web site. When you accept cookies, the server is able to evaluate your use of the web site; what you are interested in, what you want to read, etc.
WAP access point The point where your communicator connects to the WAP service by way of a data call. WAP service access point can be provided, for example, by a network operator or a WAP service provider. Certain services can be accessed through their own access point. ©2000 Nokia Mobile Phones.
