General information This chapter gives you some general information on your new phone and this owner’s guide. Labels on the phone Your phone has labels on it. These are important for service and related purposes, so be careful not to lose the label or the information it contains. Security code Note: Dual band functionality is a network dependent feature. Check with your local operator if you can subscribe to and use this functionality.
Accessories Li-Ion battery BLB-2 is the manufacturer-approved rechargeable battery available for your phone. WARNING! This apparatus is intended for use when supplied with power from ACP-8, LCH-9 and DCV-1B battery chargers. Other usage will invalidate any approval given to this apparatus and may be dangerous. Your phone 1. Your phone Keys This chapter introduces you to the keys and the standby mode display indicators of your phone. More information is given throughout this user’s guide. 1. Power key. Pressing and holding the power key on top of your phone switches the phone on or off. When pressed briefly in the standby mode or during a call, it opens the list of profiles. When pressed briefly while in the phone book or menu functions it turns the phone’s display lights on for approximately 10 seconds. 2.
6. Selection keys. Each of these keys performs the function indicated on the display above it. Pressing and holding tivates voice dialling. 7. and bar Shows the signal strength of the cellular network at your current location. The higher the bar, the stronger the signal. Names ac- Ends or rejects a call. and bar Exits from a function. Shows the battery charge level. The higher the bar, the more power there is in the battery. Connectors XXXX Stands for the network operator name.
Getting started 2. Getting started Installing the SIM card and the Battery • Keep all miniature SIM cards out of the reach of small children. • The SIM card and its contacts can easily be damaged by scratches or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting or removing the card. • Before installing the SIM card, always make sure that the phone is switched off and then remove the battery. 3. Insert your SIM card under the metal plate. Make sure that the golden connectors are facing downwards, i.e.
4. Replace the battery. It may damage the charger connector. 2. Connect the charger to an AC wall outlet. The battery indicator bar starts to scroll. The text Charging is briefly displayed if the phone is switched on. You can use the phone while charging. 5. Slide the back cover into its place. Charging the battery NOTE: If the battery is totally flat, it may take a few minutes before the charging indication appears on the display or any calls can be made.
Getting started Switching the phone on and off Press and hold the power key. NOTE: Your phone has a built-in antenna. As with any other radio-transmitting device, do not touch the antenna unnecessarily when the phone is switched on. Contact with the antenna affects call quality and may cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed. Not touching the antenna area during a phone call optimizes the antenna performance and the talktime of your phone.

Speed dialling a phone number If you have assigned a phone number to one of the speed dialling keys ( to ), you can call that phone number in either of the following ways: • Press the corresponding speed dialling key and press .
Hold or Unhold to hold or release a call New call to make a call when you have a call in progress 3. When the new call has been answered, join it in the conference call by pressing Options. Then scroll to Conference and press Select. Send DTMF to send touch tones (DTMF tones) 4. To add a new participant to the call, repeat steps 1 and 2. End all calls to end all calls Names to access the phone book Menu to access menu functions 5.
Call functions NOTE: When Keyguard is on, calls may be possible to the emergency number programmed into your phone (e.g. 112 or other official emergency number). To lock the keypad Key in the emergency number and press . The number is displayed only after you have keyed in its last digit. • While on the standby mode, press Menu and then quickly. When the keypad is locked, appears at the top of the display. To unlock the keypad • Press Unlock and then quickly.
4. Phone book (Names) You can store phone numbers and their associated names in the memory of the phone (internal phone book) or the SIM card (SIM phone book). The internal phone book can store 250 names (each of which can have up to 20 characters) and phone numbers (each of which can have up to 30 digits) at a time. The phone supports SIM cards which can store up to 250 names and phone numbers.
Phone book (Names) • To insert a number, press and hold the key labelled with the desired number. • To switch between letter and number mode, press and hold . • To insert a space, press . Recalling a name and phone number 1. In the standby mode, press Names. 2. Scroll to Search and press Select. 3. Key in the first letter(s) of the name you are searching for. • Pressing brings up a list of special characters. Move through the list to the desired character with or and press Use to insert it in the name.
• select whether to keep or erase the original name and phone number and press Select. • Scroll to the name and/or phone number to copied. Press Copy to start copying or Back to cancel the operation. If you select Copy all • select whether to keep or erase the original names and phone numbers and press Select. 4. Scroll to the name and phone number you want to erase. Press E rase and then confirm with OK. Erase all 1. In the standby mode, press Names. 2. Scroll to Erase and press Select. 3.
Phone book (Names) If a phone number is already assigned to a key, you can view the number, change it or erase it by first pressing Options. 2. Scroll to the name and phone number that you want to include in the caller group. NOTE: Assign is also shown when the phone has automatically saved a phone number from the phone book to a speed dialling key. 4. Scroll to Caller groups, and press Select. 2. Search for the desired name and/ or phone number from phone book, and press OK to select it.
If you selected Send graphic (network service), key in the recipient’s phone number or recall it from phone book and press OK. Phone book status You can check how many names and phone numbers are stored and how many locations are still free in phone book. 1. In the standby mode, press Names. • Name, number shows a single name and phone number together. • Large font shows just one name at a time. To set the type of view 1. Phone book (Names) Copying and printing via IR Copying a name and phone number to your phone Using the phone’s infrared (IR) port, you can copy names and phone numbers from a compatible phone. 1. Press Menu, scroll to Infrared (Menu 9) and press Select. Your phone is ready to receive data through its IR port. The user of the other phone can now send the name and phone number via Infrared. 2.
• You can store up to eight voice tags in the phone’s memory. NOTE: The phone must be in a service area with adequate cellular signal strength. Also, you must say the name exactly as you said it when you recorded it. This may be difficult in, for example, a noisy environment or during an emergency, so you should not rely solely upon voice dialling in all circumstances.
Phone book (Names) to activate Voice Dialling again, or Exit to return to the standby mode. 5. Press OK to erase the voice tag. 3. The phone automatically dials the number of the recognised voice tag and Searching is displayed. Changing voice tags 1. In the standby mode, press Names. 2. Scroll to Voice tag and press Select. 3. Scroll to the name (or phone number) with a voice tag you want to change, and press Options. 4. Scroll to Change and press OK. Press Start, then speak after tone is displayed. 5.
5. Using the Menu The phone offers a range of functions that allow you to tailor the phone to your needs. These functions are arranged in menus and submenus. Most of the menu functions are provided with a brief help text. To view the help text, scroll to the desired menu function and wait for 15 seconds. The menus and submenus can be accessed by scrolling or by using the shortcuts. Accessing a menu function by scrolling 1. In the standby mode, press Menu to access the menu facility.

Reading a text message (Inbox menu 1-1) • Use number to extract a phone number from the message for calling or saving it in the phone book. When you receive a text message, • Forward to send the message onwards. and the number of new messages followed by message(s) received will appear and a short tone will be heard.
Viewing your own messages (Outbox menu 1-2) You can save your own messages in this menu. 1. Once you are in the Messages menu, scroll to Outbox and press Select. 2. Scroll to the desired message and press Read to view it. 3. Pressing Options while you are reading a message allows you to access the same functions as ‘Inbox’ (Menu 1-1), except for Reply and Details. Writing and sending a text message Within the Write messages menu you can write and edit text messages of up to 160 characters.
Menu functions 5. Enter the recipient’s phone number, or recall the phone number from phone book by pressing Search. Find the desired number and press OK. 6. Press OK to send the message. Predictive text input Predictive text input allows you to key in any characters by single keypresses. This text input is based on a built-in dictionary to which you can add new words. • To insert a symbol, press and hold . Scroll to the desired symbol and press Use. Alternatively, press Options, scroll to Insert symbol, and press OK. Scroll to the desired symbol and press Use. 2. When you have finished writing the word and it is correct, confirm it by pressing or by adding space with . Writing compound words 1. Key in the first part of the word and accept it by pressing . 2. Write the last part of the compound word and accept the word by pressing or . Picture messages (Menu 1-4) 3.
Menu functions Sending a picture message 1. In the Picture messages menu, select one of the preset pictures and press View. Message settings (Menu 1-5) Set 1 (Menu 1-5-1)1 2. If the displayed picture is the one you want, press Options, scroll to Edit text and press Select. A setting group or ‘set’ is a collection of the settings required for sending text messages. If the displayed picture is not the one you want, press Back and repeat step 1.
• Message validity This network service allows you to set the length of time that your text messages are saved at the message centre while attempts are made to deliver them. • Rename this set Allows you to rename the set. Common (Menu 1-5-2)1 • Delivery reports you can request the network to send delivery reports about your text messages (network service). • Reply via same centre you can request the network to route the reply to your text message via your own message centre (network service).
Menu functions 4. If you selected Also voice in step 2, to switch between voice and data/ fax mode during a call, press Options, select Voice Mode or Data Mode (or Fax Mode) and press OK. 5. After the transmission, end the call by pressing . Receiving a data or fax call You can answer a data or fax call in the normal way, even when the phone keypad is locked.
Missed calls (Menu 2-1) This function allows you to view a list of the last ten phone numbers from which somebody has tried to call you with no success (network service). Using the options provided in the Missed calls menu you can view the date and time of each call, and view, edit, erase or save the number in the phone book. TIP: When a note about missed calls is being displayed, press List to see the phone number. To call back immediately, press .
Menu functions Show call costs (Menu 2-6) This network service allows you to check the approximate costs of your last call, all calls and clear the counters. To clear the counters you may need to have the PIN2 code. See ‘Reference Information’ ‘Access Codes’. The costs are shown in terms of units set within Menu 2-7-2 for each SIM card. NOTE: The actual invoice for calls and services from your service provider may vary, depending upon network features, rounding-off for billing, taxes and so forth.

To customise the profiles, scroll to the desired profile , for example General, and press Options. 3. Select Personalise and press OK. • If you select Activate, the selected profile is only set on. The profile cannot be customised. NOTE: When the phone is connected to the car kit PPH-1 or headset HDC-5, the Activate function is not available. 4.
Menu functions Vibrating alert Sets the phone to vibrate when a voice call is received. The vibrator does not operate when the phone is connected to a charger or a deskstand. NOTE: While in phone book or the menu functions, you can switch on the lights for approximately 10 seconds by pressing the power key quickly even if Automatic is selected. Sets the ringing tone for text messages.
When the alarm time is reached The phone sounds an alert tone. When the phone is alerting, Alarm! is also shown and the phone’s lights flash. If you let the phone sound the alarm for a full minute or if you press any other key, the alarm stops for a few minutes and then resumes. You can end this ‘snoozing’ by pressing Stop or by switching the phone off. If the alarm time expires while the phone is switched off, the phone starts alerting.
Menu functions Call waiting options (Menu 4-4-4) When this network service is activated, the network will notify you of a new incoming call while you have a call in progress. The phone sounds a soft alert tone. Own number sending (Menu 4-4-5) This network service allows you to set whether your phone number is shown to or hidden from the person that you are calling. Preset resets the phone to the default setting, On or Off, that you have agreed upon with your service provider.
List of own numbers (Menu 4-5-4) This function is a memory aid, which you can use to check your own phone numbers if you need to do so. Within this menu you can store, erase and edit the phone numbers assigned to your SIM card, if this is allowed by the card. The edits that you make here do not affect in any way the actual subscriber number(s) of your SIM card.
Menu functions • International except to home country calls can be made only within and to your home country. • Incoming calls calls cannot be received. • Incoming calls if abroad calls cannot be received outside your home country. • Cancel all barrings For each function, except Cancel all barrings, you have the following options: Activate, Cancel, or Status, which shows the types of barred call. When you make a call and a barring mode is activated, the phone may display a note reminding you of this.

Phone line change (Menu 4-6-7) You can allow or prevent the selection of a phone line. When Not allowed is selected, you cannot use the ‘Phone line in use’ function. To allow or prevent the phone line change, you need PIN 2 code.
Menu functions Each phone line may have its own divert settings. • Continue allows you to resume a paused game. TIP: If Divert when busy is activated, rejecting an incoming call will also divert a call. • Last view shows the final view of the game immediately after the game ended. Games (Menu 6) Starting a 2-player game Snake can be played as a 2-player game. Your phone offers you four games to play: Memorize, Snake, Logic and Rotation. NOTE: Your phone must be switched on to use this function.

Menu functions • Move to change the date and time of the note. • Send note to send the note as a text message (SMS). • Send via IR to copy the note to another compatible phone by using the infrared port. • Make note to write a note. You can choose from the following types of note: • Reminder is indicated by . Key in the note and the date and press OK. • Call is indicated by . Key in the desired phone number, or recall it from phone book, and the date when the call should be made, press OK.
• There must be no obstructions between the two communicating devices. • The IR ports of the two devices must point at each other. Receiving data via the IR port To receive data from another compatible phone: 1. Ensure that the two phones are ready for the IR connection. 2. Select the Infrared menu to activate the IR port for data reception. • Send a graphic via IR. See ‘Caller groups’. • Copy and print names and numbers from Phone Book. See ‘Copying and printing via IR’.
Menu functions When blinks, your phone is trying to establish a connection with the other device or a connection has been lost. Services (Menu 10) Nokia Smart Messaging enables the use of a variety of network services offered by operators or service providers.
Downloading the list of services Once the access numbers have been saved, you can download the list of services provided by the network in the following way: 1. Select the menu item Update operator services. 2. Press Select. A request message for the list of available services is sent. 3. Wait until you receive the reply message from the network. NOTE: The content of the reply message will depend on the service provider. The message can, for example, contain one particular service or a list of services.
Menu functions Other services Some Smart Messaging services may be saved and accessed in different ways to Nokia and Operator services. The service address for such services may be sent to your phone by a service provider, or you can manually add a service address by using the Add new service menu. For availability of services and additional information, contact your service provider.
7. Reference information Access codes asked each time the phone is switched on. You can use the access codes described in this section to avoid unauthorised use of your phone and SIM card. If you key in an incorrect PIN code three times in succession, key in the PUK code and press OK. Key in a new PIN code and press OK. Key in the new code again and press OK. The access codes (except PUK and PUK2 codes) can be changed by using Menu 4-6-6. See the following section.
Reference information You cannot change the PUK code. If you lose the code, contact your service provider. Battery information PUK2 code (8 digit) Li-Ion battery BLB-2 is the manufacturer-approved rechargeable battery is available for your phone. The PUK2 code, supplied with some SIM cards, is required to change a blocked PIN2 code. Charging and discharging the battery If you key in an incorrect PUK2 code ten times in succession, you cannot use the functions requiring the PIN2 code.
• Temperature extremes will affect the ability of your battery to charge: allow it to cool down or warm up first. • When the battery is running out of power and only few minutes of talk time remain, a warning tone is heard and Battery low is briefly displayed. When no more talk time is left, Battery empty is displayed and a warning tone is sounded and the phone switches itself off. Using the batteries • Use the battery only for its intended purpose.

Deactivating/ Activating The EFR Codec 1. Introduction The Nokia N8210 fully meet and comply with all EFR codec and relevant compatibility specifications. Reference information VEHICLE Mobile Charger (LCH-9) The multivoltage Mobile Charger, LCH-9, ensure your phone is always ready for use whenever you travel. This small charger's functional design fits most car lighters and interiors. The charging time for the BLB-2 battery is about 1 hour 25 minutes, and you can use your phone freely during charging. A green light indicates that the Mobile Charger is ready for charging. Check the charging status on the phone display.
Clip-on Kit (SKB-2) You can use just the pocket clip to keep your phone conveniently in your pocket for easy access. To install, remove the original back cover of phone and replace with this pocket clip. Keep the original back cover for later use if needed. Alternatively you can clip the phone to a Nokia button. Reference information Carrying case (CSJ-2) With this designer case, you can find new ways to wear your phone; on a belt, on your arm or clip on wherever suitable. It comes with a removable arm band that fits arm size 8" to 13". Also included is a detachable clip which opens and closes by twisting the clip around. Place phone in carrying case with antenna facing outwards for better antenna performance. Button of carrying case is cut our for usage with an optional personal handsfree kit HDC-5 as well.
