Enhancing GPS Performance
Sometimes the GPS feature of your Smartphone may be unable to complete a location
calculation successfully. If this happens when you are making an emergency call, the
location of the nearest cell tower in contact with your Smartphone is made available to
the appropriate emergency response center if the center has the capability to receive
such information. If this happens when you are trying to view your location on the
Smartphone’s display, you will see a message indicating that your Smartphone cannot
access satellites.
To improve accuracy and increase your chances of a successful calculation, do the
following while your Smartphone is determining your approximate location:
• Stay in the open. The GPS feature works best where there is nothing between your
Smartphone and a large amount of open sky. If possible, go outside, away from tall
buildings and foliage. While performance in a building is improved by moving closer to
windows, glass with certain sun shielding films may block satellite signals.
• Extend your Smartphone antenna.
• Hold your Smartphone to enhance reception. Signals from GPS satellites are
transmitted to your GPS antenna, which is in your Smartphone antenna. Hold your
Smartphone away from your body, giving the antenna clear access to satellite signals.
Do not cover the antenna area with your fingers or anything else.
• Move away from electronic devices. Radios, entertainment devices, and other
electronic devices may generate interfering signals that may prevent GPS receiver
operation if they are in close proximity to the phone. Move your phone away from such
devices when using the GPS-Enabled feature.
• Stand still. If possible, stand still until your Smartphone is finished determining your
location. Moving your Smartphone at a walking pace while your Smartphone is
calculating your approximate location may substantially decrease GPS performance.
• In a car. When using the GPS Enabled feature in a car, position your Smartphone so
that the GPS antenna has good access to GPS signals through the car’s windows.
Typically, the GPS antenna has best access to GPS signals in a car when placed near
a window.
Note: Although moving your Smartphone at a walking pace decreases GPS
performance, moving it at the speed of a moving car does not.
