2. Safety instructions
The Digital Microphone Interface DMI-2 portable
provides power and remote control for digital mi-
crophones in accordance with to the international
standard AES42 and makes the microphone signal
available in AES/EBU format.
Connect to the inputs only digital microphones
that comply with the AES42 standard.
When connecting other digital sources with AES3
or AES/EBU outputs, the Digital Phantom Power
(DPP) used to power digital microphones must be
switched off via the RCS.
Connect the outputs only to the corresponding in-
puts of subsequent devices.
The control interface (CTL) must be connected
only to a USB host (PC/Mac).
Repairs and servicing are to be carried out only
by experienced, authorized service personnel.
Unauthorized opening or modifi cation of the
equipment shall void the warranty.
Allow the equipment to adjust to the ambient tem-
perature before switching it on.
Do not operate the equipment in a damaged con-
dition.
Always run cables in such a way that there is no
risk of tripping over them.
Ensure that liquids and electrically conductive
objects unless required for operation are kept at
a safe distance from the equipment and its con-
nections.
Do not use solvents or aggressive cleansers for
cleaning purposes.
Dispose of the equipment in accordance with the
regulations applicable to the respective country.
Please note: All information relating to the micro-
phones refers to digital microphones of the Neu-
mann Solution-D series.

3. Description
The DMI-2 portable provides power and remote
control for digital microphones that operate in
accordance with the AES42 standard (see www.
aes.org).
The most important features of the DMI-2 portable
are as follows:
Menu-driven control of digital microphones,
with a data display and push-switch rotary en-
coders (permitting the setting of most impor-
tant microphone parameters and the loading of
preset parameters).
Remote Control Software RCS for PC/Mac, to
load and store preset parameters for the con-
nected digital microphones and to control all
microphone parameters remotely.
Providing a power supply and remote control of
2 digital microphones (in accordance with the
AES42 standard).
Receiving and processing the audio data of the
microphone.
Generating output signals in AES/EBU format.
Synchronizing the microphones with the DMI-2
portable word clock, in accordance with the
AES42 standard Mode 2 (see Section 7.4 Syn-
chronization)
Automatically synchronizing the DMI-2 porta-
ble to an external synchronization signal (word
clock or AES11)
Supporting all standard sampling rates: 44.1 /
48 / 88.2 / 96 / 176.4 / 192 kHz.
Maintaining all settings for connected micro-
phones in the DMI-2 portable. When the power
is switched on, these settings are transmitted
to the microphones via the remote control data
stream; no computer connection is required.
Menu-driven control
The DMI-2 portable permits direct menu-driven
control via two push-switch rotary encoders with
data display.
DISPLAY
The default display shows the selected gain of
both microphones as well as the signal level and
any gain reductions. Submenus permit the load-
ing of 8 diff erent presets for all digital micro-
phone parameters as well as the direct control of
specifi ed microphone parameters (e.g. preattenu-
ation and lowcut).
PUSH-SWITCH ROTARY ENCODERS
Two push-switch rotary encoders permit direct
control of the device:
Left rotary encoder: Push (5 seconds) to switch
the device on and off and to exit the menu. Rotate
to select gain in the main menu and to set param-
eters in the submenus for the microphone at CH1.
Right rotary encoder: Push to actuate the menu.
Rotate to select and push to actuate a submenu.
Rotate to select gain in the main menu, and to set
parameters in the submenu for the microphone at
CH2.
Attention: Direct menu-driven control of the de-
vice is locked when remote control is used.
Indicators (Fig. 1)
MAIN/AUX POWER
Indicates that the equipment is ready for opera-
tion and shows the status of the power supplies
(external main power supply and external auxil-
iary power supply).
During startup, both indicators are dimly lit. The
indicator of the active power supply then shines
brightly, while the indicator of an available sec-
ond power supply shines less brightly. The cor-
responding indicator blinks if there is a failure of
the power supply during operation.
VALID
Indicates a valid AES42 data stream from the
microphone to the DMI-2 portable. The indicator
blinks while the microphone is being synchro-
nized. It shines continuously when a valid data
stream is being received and the microphone has
been synchronized.
EXT WCLK
Indicates that an external synchronization sig-
nal is being fed to the “WORD CLOCK (or AES11)
input. If no external synchronization signal is
detected, the indicator will not be lit up. The in-
dicator blinks if a signal is present but synchro-
nization has not yet been achieved. The indicator
shines continuously when the DMI-2 portable
has been successfully synchronized. Continuous
blinking of the indicator means that an invalid
synchronization signal is being received by the
DMI-2 portable; this may be due to an invalid
word clock frequency (+/–50 ppm) or to excessive
jitter values.
Ports (Fig. 2/3)
POWER MAIN/AUX
The DMI-2 portable has two Hirose connectors,
one for the main power supply, and one for the
auxiliary power supply. The device starts opera-
tion using the main power supply. If the currently
active power supply fails (e.g. if the rechargeable
