Chapter 4 - MultiVOIP Software
With Gatekeeper Enabled
Enabling the Gatekeeper option on the Phone Directory Database dialog box means that the
Gatekeeper acts as the central point for all calls within its zone and provides call control services to
registered endpoints. The Gatekeeper performs address translation from LAN aliases to IP
addresses and provides bandwidth management where the network manager has specified a
threshold for the number of simultaneous conferences on the LAN.
Adding and/or editing entries in the H.323 Gatekeeper database must be done from the Add/Edit
Phone Entry dialog box. Deleting entries is done by highlighting the entry to be deleted in the Phone
Directory Database dialog box and clicking the Delete button.
To change a parameter of an existing entry already registered with the Gatekeeper database,
highlight the entry currently listed in the Phone Directory Database dialog box and click the Edit
button. The Add/Edit Phone Entry dialog box is displayed with the current information.
If you simply want to change the Description field (e.g., John no longer works at the company and
you want to change the name to “Bob’s Desk”), enter the new description and click OK. The update
will be made automatically to the Gatekeeper database. However, if you need to change any of the
other parameters in the Add/Edit Phone Entry dialog box, you will need to consult with the
Gatekeeper administrator. Contact the Gatekeeper administrator (e.g., by phone or e-mail) and
determine together that any changes to the phone entry’s parameters will not create duplication.
When consulting with the Gatekeeper administrator, note that the Station Information group phone
number does not have to be a conventional phone number. For example, it does not have to be 717-
5565. It can be a single digit or several digits. You could enter a phone number of 101 with a
description of New York Office 1 and assign it to channel 1.
Note: The phone number must not conflict with other endpoints.
When consulting with the Gatekeeper administrator, note that the Station Identification group H323
ID is a unique identifier that represents the name of the gateway with the name of the Gatekeeper
appended to the end (e.g., fom@multitech.com). 1720 is the H.323 industry standard Port number of
all H.323 endpoints. The IP Address field is for the IP Address of the New York 1 endpoint and is an
optional (redundant) entry.
Note: The Port field is enabled (activated) only when the IP Address of the H.323 endpoint is
entered.
When you enter this information and click OK, the information is updated automatically at the
Gatekeeper database.
