TheModemDialsButCannotConnect
TherecanbeseveralreasonstheZBAfailstomakeaconnection.Possibilitiesinclude:
● lackofaphysicalconnectiontothetelephoneline.
● awrongdialtone.
● abusysignal.
● awrongnumber.
● nomodemattheotherend.
● afaultymodem,computer , orsoftwareattheotherend.
● incompatibilitybetweenmodems.
Youcannarrowthelistofpossibilitiesbyusingextendedresultcodes.Extendedresultcodesareenabledby
default.Iftheyhavebeendisabled, enterATV1X4andpressENTERwhileinterminalmode,orincludeV1X4inthe
modem’sinitializationstring.Whenyoudialagain,themodemwillreporttheca
ll’sprogress.
● IfthemodemreportsNODIALTONE,checkthatthemodem’stelephonelinecableisconnectedtoboth
themodem’sLINEjack(notthePHONEjack)andthetelephonewalljack.Ifthecablelookssecure,try
replacingit.Ifthatdoesn’twork,theproblemmightbeinyourbuilding’stelephoneinstallation.Totest
thebuildingi
nstallation,plugatelephoneintoyourmodem’stelephonewalljackandlistenforadial
tone.Ifyouhearadialtone,yourmodemmightbeinstalledbehindacompanyphonesystem(PBX)with
aninternaldialtonethatsoundsdifferentfromthenormaldialtone.Inthatca
se,themodemmightnot
recognizethedialtoneandmighttreatitasanerror.CheckyourPBXmanualtoseeifyoucanchangethe
internaldialtone;ifyoucan’t,changeyourmodem’sinitializationstringtoreplaceX4withX3,whichwill
causethemodemtoignoredialtones(note,howeve
r,thatX3isnotallowedinsomecountries,suchas
FranceandSpain).
● IfthemodemreportsBUSY,theothernumbermightbebusy,inwhichcaseyoushouldtryagainlater,or
itmightindicatethatyouhavefailedtoadda9,prefixtothephonenumberifyoumustdial9foran
outsideline.
● Ifyoumustdial9togetanoutsideline,theeasiestwaytodialitautomaticallyistoincludeitinthe
modem’sdialprefix,e.g.,ATDT9,.Notethecomma,whichinsertsapausebefo rethenumberisdialed.By
inserting9,intothedialprefix,youdonothavetoin
cludeitineachdirectoryentry.
● TochangethedialprefixinWindows98HyperTerminal,selectCallfromtheCallmenu,clickDialing
Properties,andtype9inthelocalandlongdistanceboxesinHowIdialfromthislocation.
● IfthemodemreportsNOANSWER,theothersystemhasfailedtogooff‐hook,oryoumighthavedialeda
wrongnumber.Checkthenumber.
● IfthemodemreportsNOCARRIER,thephonewasansweredattheotherend,butnoconnectionwas
made.Youmighthavedialedawrongnumber,andapersonansweredinsteadofacomputer,oryou
mighthavedialedthecorrectnumber,buttheothercomputerorsoftwarewasturnedofforfaulty.
Checkth
enumberandtryagain,ortrycallinganothersystemtomakesureyourmodemisworking.Also,
trycallingthenumberonyourtelephone.Ifyouhearharshsounds,thenanothermodemisanswering
thecall,andthemodemsmightbehavingproblemsnegotiatingbecauseofmodemi
ncompatibilitiesor
linenoise.Tryconnectingatalowerspeed.
