Setting Up Serial Printers
Use the following instructions to set up a serial printer.
These instructions assume you have the number of an available tty and the number of the LP that
the end user wants to create. The following examples use tty25 and LP4. Insert your own tty and
LP numbers as you step through these instructions for your system.
The following procedures describe how to:
Set up a serial printer in AIX.
Set up a serial printer in UniVerse.
Configure a serial printer.
To set up a serial printer in AIX:
1. Login to AIX-Unix as root.
The system displays the login banner and the system prompt (#).
2. Type pdisable tty25 and press Enter.
This disables the tty, preventing another person from using it.
3. Type smit chgtty and press Enter to display the SMIT CHGTTY screen.
4. Using the Arrow keys, select the appropriate tty, such as tty25, and press Enter.
5. In the Enable Login field, hold the Esc key and press the number 4 (Esc+4) to display a
valid list of options, select Disable, and press Enter.
The Change tty screen displays.
6. In the Baud Rate field, hold the Esc key and press the number 4 (Esc+4) to display the
valid list of options for that field, select 9600 (standard), and press Enter.
The Change tty screen displays again.
7. Press Enter to complete these changes.
OK displays in the upper left corner of the screen to indicate the changes are complete.
8. Press 0 while holding down the Esc key (Esc+0+)) to return to the system prompt (#).
To set up a serial printer in UniVerse:
1. At the system prompt (#), type su - uv and press Enter to access UniVerse.
Note: If the system displays the UniVerse prompt (>), type login to display the
UniVerse System Administration screen.
2. Select Spooler Management/Device Management/Maintain Devices to display the
Maintain Devices screen.
3. In the Printer Name field, enter the name of the printer. For example, enter LP4.
