Section 2 Operation Operation of the Model 643 Tension/Compression Grips consists simply of installing a button-end or threaded specimen using the appropriate specimen adapter. To install a button-ended specimen refer to Subsection 2.1. To install a threaded specimen refer to Subsection 2.2. These procedures assume the grips have been properly installed in the load unit as described in Section 3.
1. Select system force control in the most sensitive range available. Displacement control is not recommended in the following steps, however, if only displacement control is available, use extreme care not to apply specimen-damaging forces. 2. Apply full system hydraulic pressure according to applicable system procedures. Use extreme care not to cause rapid actuator movement when performing the following steps. 3.
10. Slide the upper collar over the end of the specimen as shown in Figure 2-2 and let it rest on the lower collar. 11. Install the split button-end adapter into the upper collar as shown in Figure 2-2. WARNING Failure to zero dc error will result in sudden actuator movement. This can cause injury to personnel and/or damage to equipment. Do not apply system hydraulic pressure with other than zero dc error (command = feedback). 12.
Figure 2-2. Button-end Specimen Installation (Upper Grip) WARNING Placing hands in the crush zone between the Grip faces with hydraulic pressure applied and the actuator moving is dangerous. This can result in injury to personnel and damaging forces being applied to the specimen. Keep hands out of the crush zone while performing the following steps. 13. Adjust the position of the actuator or crosshead until the specimen just contacts the upper grip base. 14. Remove system hydraulic pressure. 15.

2.2 Installing Threaded Specimens Perform the following steps to install a threaded specimen in the Grip. The procedure assumes the Grip base has been properly installed in the load unit as described in Section 3. This procedure also assumes that the operator is familiar with all operating aspects of the system electrical controller and interlock restrictions that apply to starting the hydraulic power supply.
Slide coller over adapter Secure with socket head cap screws Install assembly into pilot of base Thread adapter onto specimen Ensure equal measurement all the way around Figure 2-4. Threaded Specimen Installation (Lower Grip) 10. Slide the upper collar over the end of the specimen and let it rest on the lower collar. 11. Thread the adapter onto the specimen until approximately 3 threads are showing on the opposite end. WARNING Failure to zero dc error will result in sudden actuator movement.
12. Apply full system hydraulic pressure according to applicable system procedures. Use extreme care not to cause rapid actuator movement when performing the following steps. WARNING Placing hands in the crush zone between the Grip faces with hydraulic pressure applied and the actuator moving is dangerous. This can result in injury to personnel and damaging forces being applied to the specimen. Keep hands out of the crush zone while performing the following steps. 13.
. Slide the collar up the specimen and over the adapter. 16. Install the socket head cap screws finger tight. 17. Tighten all the cap screws on both grips to 10% of the torque specified in Table 2-1 in the order shown in Figure 2-2. Measure the gap between the collar and the grip base to ensure it is equal all the way around. Tighten and loosen cap screws as necessary to achieve an equal measurement. 18. Operation Continue tightening the cap screws in 10% increments.
Section 3 Installation 3.1 What You Will Need To Know A sound working knowledge of the following is required before proceeding. • How to apply and remove hydraulic pressure to the system. - Apply and remove hydraulic pressure only when instructed to do so. - Refer to the Operator's Guide for specific details regarding the application of hydraulic pressure to the system. For non-TestStar systems: always ensure the dc error is zero before applying hydraulic pressure (refer to the following warning).
3.2 Mounting the Grips The following steps apply where the grip is mounted to an MTS load unit or actuator using a threaded connector stud. Contact MTS Systems Corporation for other than stud mounting configurations. The following materials and equipment are required for installation: • 2 sets of spiral washers, • 2 connector studs, • a quantity of Molykote® G-n (part number 110102-07) lubricant (included in the seal kit).
Force Transducer Connector Stud Spiral Washers Grip Base Grip Base Connector Stud Spiral Washers Actuator Piston Rod Load Unit Base Plate Figure 3-1.
NOTE: If installing the grip on a force transducer perform the force transducer alignment procedure (refer to the appropriate load unit product manual) prior to performing step 5. 5. Clean the connector studs and the internal threads of the force train element(s) with a wire brush. Inspect the mating surfaces for signs of particle contamination or corrosion. All damaged threads should be repaired or the element replaced. 6. Apply a thin coat of Molykote® G-n paste to all mating surfaces. 7.
WARNING Sudden actuator movement may result if system hydraulic pressure is applied while the dc error (command = feedback) is other than zero. This may cause injury to personnel and/or damage to equipment. Zero the dc error before applying system hydraulic pressure. 3.3 16. Adjust the system controller for zero dc error and apply system hydraulic pressure according to applicable system procedures. 17.
1. Select force control at the system controller. WARNING Sudden actuator movement may result if system hydraulic pressure is applied while the dc error (command = feedback) is other than zero. This may cause injury to personnel and/or damage to equipment. Zero the dc error before applying system hydraulic pressure. 2. Adjust the system controller for zero dc error and apply system hydraulic pressure according to applicable system procedures. 3.
