Overview Overview About the Model 494.05 Handset The Model 494.05 Handset is a portable device that provides another interface (in addition to the Station Manager application) where you can control a station. Either the Station Manager application or the handset (not both) can have “exclusive control” of a station.
Overview About Display Pages The handset user interface groups control functions into display pages. Display pages are functional only when the handset has “exclusive control” of the station. The first two characters in the top line of the display indicate the display page function: MC=manual command, AO=auto offset, and HC=hydraulic control. MC = Manual Command *MC SN1 Channel 2 >Displ 130.5 mm -Force 234 kN *MC SN1 Ch 2 >Displ 130.

Physically install the serial boards required for the number of handsets used by the system: The Model 494.05 Handset requires one of the following serial boards: • FlexTest 40, 60, 100, 200 systems—a Model 494.47 Dual UART/ Digital Transducer Conditioner mezzanine card that is installed on a Model 494.40 I/O Carrier board can support up to two handsets.
Handset Setup Procedures About Exclusive Control You can control hydraulic pressure and actuator movement with the interface of the Station Manager application. This is referred to as station control. Some systems are equipped with a portable device (such as the handset) that has an interface that also allows you to perform station control. For safety reasons, the system limits station control to only one interface at a time. That interface is said to have “exclusive control.
Handset Setup Procedures About Exclusive Control and the Handset The Model 494.05 Handset is a portable device that provides station control. It is typically used to facilitate specimen installation, and because it is mobile, it is more convenient to use in close proximity to the specimen than the PC interface. Note Using exclusive control at the Operator access level When you open a station that includes a handset, neither the handset nor the Station Manager application has exclusive control.
Handset Setup Procedures This is important because it prevents anyone from changing tuning and calibration settings at the PC while the operator is using the handset to move the actuator. While you do not use tuning and calibration controls to move the actuator directly, they do affect actuator response.
Handset Setup Procedures WARNING Allowing exclusive control of the handset at any access level allows tuning and calibration adjustments to be made while the handset has exclusive control. This may result in unexpected system response. Unexpected system response may cause injury and damage equipment. Ensure that all personnel are properly trained and are aware of the state of the “Allow exclusive control at any access level” control when using the equipment.
Handset Setup Procedures Once this control is disabled, you must attain the Configuration access level to re-enable it. Default access level when this control is not enabled If the “Allow exclusive control at any access level” control is not enabled, and you assign exclusive control to the handset, the access level automatically changes to Operator. How to Assign Exclusive Control to a Handset 1. If necessary, assign a handset to the station.
Handset Setup Procedures WARNING Allowing exclusive control at any access level can result in unexpected actuator movement. Unexpected actuator behavior can cause equipment damage, serious injury, or both. Ensure that all personnel involved in test design, operation, tuning, and calibration are properly trained. Be aware of the current user access level and exclusive control assignment at all times, especially when working in close proximity to an actuator.
Handset Setup Procedures How to Select a Handset Use the Station Manager application to select the handset that you will use with the station. Note When the handset is not assigned to a station, the handset display shows "MTS Systems" and the firmware version. 1. Start the Station Manager application. 2. In the main Station Manager window, set the access level to Operator. 3. On the Tools menu, click Station Options. 4. In the Station Options window, click the Handset Options tab. 5.
Handset Setup Procedures Note You can click Thumbwheel Speed to display a window that allows you to customize the Thumbwheel Speed slider control. How to Set the Handset Thumbwheel Direction Use the Station Options window to set what direction the actuator moves when you move the thumbwheel. 1. Start the Station Manager application. 2. Set the Station Manager access level to Tuning. 3. On the Tools menu, click Station Options. 4. In the Station Options window, click the Handset Options tab. 5.
Handset Setup Procedures How to Allow Exclusive Control at Any Access Level 1. Access Configuration user level. 2. In the Station Manager application, follow the path: Tools>Station Options>Handset Options tab WARNING Allowing exclusive control at any access level can result in unexpected actuator movement. Unexpected actuator behavior can cause equipment damage, serious injury, or both. Ensure that all personnel involved in test design, operation, tuning and calibration are properly trained.
Handset Control Procedures Handset Control Procedures How to Limit Manual Command with the Handset A control on the Handset Options tab of the Station Options window (Station Manager > Tools > Station Options > Handset Options tab) prevents use of control modes with feedbacks of force or torque dimensions being used for manual command. By default, this control is disabled. To enable this control, you must attain the Configuration access level in the Station Manager application.
Handset Control Procedures How to Reset/Override Interlocks The Interlock Reset/Override function allows you to enter Manual Command mode, apply hydraulic pressure, and reposition the actuator during an interlock. This function is typically used to manually bring an actuator back into its calibrated range. Note The handset Reset/Override key performs the same function as the Reset/Override button in the Station Manager window. WARNING Applying hydraulics can result in sudden actuator motion.
Handset Control Procedures How to Apply Hydraulics When the Active Mode Signal Is Saturated The handset does not allow you to apply hydraulics when the active mode signal is saturated. 1. If the active mode signal is saturated and you attempt to use the handset to apply hydraulics, the following message appears: “Channel is saturated. Use Station Manager.” 2. Switch exclusive control back to the Station Manager application. 3.
Handset Control Procedures How to Use Manual Command to Move the Actuator With hydraulic pressure applied, manual control allows you to use the thumbwheel to extend or retract the actuator. Note Manual command will be automatically disabled if the handset is idle for 90 seconds. 1. On the handset, press 2. If necessary, press (Exclusive Control). (Reset/Override) to override interlocks. 3. Apply hydraulics. When possible, use low pressure to move the actuator.
Handset Control Procedures 7. When you are finished positioning the actuator, press Command) to exit Manual Command. (Manual How to Control Hydraulics There is a Hydraulics Control (HC) page for each HPU and HSM. The top line in the display identifies the name or the HPU/HSM resource as defined in the system .hwi file. 1. On the handset, press (Exclusive Control). 2. Use the (Page Forward) or Hydraulics Control (HC) page. (Page Back) keys to display the The > symbol shows the active state.
Handset Control Procedures 4. Press (Enter) to set the HSM to Low Pressure (HSM Low). * HC SN1 HSM1T2=J28B Off > Low - High 5. Press (Enter) again to set the HSM to High Pressure (HSM High). *HC SN1 HSM1 T2=J28B Off - Low > High How to Run Programs from the Handset You can use the handset to run programs that are loaded on the station, such as the MultiPurpose Testware (MPT) or Basic Testware applications. 1. Start the Station Manager application. A. Load a station. B. Select a handset. C.
Handset Control Procedures 5. Press (Program Run). Once the program starts, you can disable Exclusive Control and the program continues to run. To pause a program, press (Program Hold). When the program is paused, the (Program Run) indicator blinks. To resume running a paused program, press (Program Run). How to Clear Error Messages from the Display Handset error messages appear if you attempt to perform a function that is not allowed. 1.
