To get the maximum intended use of the system, it is recommended that careful consideration be given to planning its installation. This includes: • The types of testing that will be performed. • The building facilities requirements for power, cooling water, air conditioning, ceiling height, floor loading, and so on.

Responsibilities This section details the responsibilities of both the customer and MTS to ensure that the proposed testing area is suitable for the installation and operation of the test system.
Customer’s Responsibilities Customer’s Responsibilities It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that all required support services are available, and that all necessary checks are made prior to installing the test system. These services and checks are described below. Site Preparation Proper site preparation is imperative so that the test system operates in accordance with its specifications and provides accurate test results.
MTS’ Responsibilities MTS’ Responsibilities MTS’ standard contract requires MTS to provide the necessary services to ensure that your test system operates accurately. These services are described below. Additional services and equipment may be negotiated with MTS, but these additional services must be mutually agreed upon and specifically described in your purchase order.
Preparing to Receive the System Site Preparation This section describes the physical, electrical, and mechanical requirements that must be considered before installing the MTS Criterion Test System. Read the following subsections thoroughly to identify installation considerations that apply to your facility. Preparing to Receive the System Prior to receiving the system, ensure suitable rigging equipment is available for lifting and transporting the system components.
Floor Loading Considerations Consideration should also be given to handling specimens, test data, and storage of fixturing and associated tools necessary for use and service of the system. If hazardous test specimens (such as those pressurized internally with gas or fragmentizing materials) are used in the test, protective enclosures and special laboratory layouts are advised.
Electrical Power Distribution Electrical Power Distribution Note Electrical connections must be made by qualified personnel and conform to local codes and regulations. Local electrical codes supersede any information found here. The input line voltage to the MTS Criterion Test System must be rated for the voltage and current specified in the “Electrical Power Requirements” section on page 21. Size the power system with adequate reserve for future equipment additions and installation expansion.
Fixture and Specimen Handling Considerations Fixture and Specimen Handling Considerations Movement of specimens in and out of the test system must be considered early in the planning of the site layout. With smaller specimens, the use of a rolling work cart with storage drawers is often recommended to facilitate the handling of specimens and to minimize the chance of damage to the specimens prior to and after the test.
Altitude Heat dissipation for the load frame, the PC cabinet/desk, and other electronic units can be estimated by summing the losses going to heat in the room(approximately 6000 BTU [1500 kcal/hr] for a single 15 amp power panel or 8000 BTU [2000 kcal/hr] for a single 20 amp power panel)and the gains from personnel and other heat inputs such as furnaces. To this figure, you should add 20% additional heat gain for future changes in test requirements.

Lifting and moving instructions that describe proper handling methods are placed in a protective envelope and shipped with the load unit.
When You Get Your System When You Get Your System Operation of your system can involve exposure to hazardous situations: • High voltages are present at the load unit. • Injury may occur while handling samples. • Personnel can become injured in the crush zone. • Some high temperature accessories (furnace and environmental chambers for instance) may scald personnel. Because of these potential hazards, your system is provided with documentation that includes information on safety practices.
Site Location Site Requirements Checklist The following checklist provides a quick summary of items that should be considered when planning and preparing the site location of your test system. Additional information regarding each item below is provided within this manual. If you need more specific information, contact your local authorized MTS office for assistance. Note This manual provides general guidelines for all types of frames.
Transporting Transporting • You have the correct number of packing boxes as stated on the packing list. • Insurance coverage is secured or verified. • You have the required equipment for the chosen transporting method. • You have the appropriate packaging to protect the load frame when moving or relocating it. • The pathway from the loading dock to the final site location has sufficient width and height to fit the frame and forklift (or crane).
Lift and Move Instructions This section provides guidelines for lifting and moving your MTS Criterion material test system. Unless otherwise specified, it is your responsibility to safely off-load, unpack, and move the equipment to the final location on your premises. Equipment insurance is also your responsibility. Before moving the equipment from the receiving area to its final location, check the dimensions of all doors and passages through which the machine will travel.
Moving C41 Single-Column Frames Moving C41 Single-Column Frames The single-column load frames are shipped with wooden packaging. They are strapped to the wooden skid. Accompanying components are packed in cardboard cartons and also strapped to the wooden skid. Ensure that the test system is placed on a stable or other suitable work platform that can support the test system weight.
Moving C41 Single-Column Frames Procedure To unpack and position the load frame: 1. Move the load frame, still in the shipping material, to its final location within your building. Use a forklift to transport the container from the shipping dock to the final location. Unpack the load frame after it has been moved to its final location. 2. Remove the shipping material, leaving the load frame fastened to the shipping skid. 3. Remove the shrink wrap vapor barrier encasing the load frame. 4.

Moving C43 (10 kN) Double-Column Frames Equipment Procedure The following items are required by the customer: • A forklift with a load rating that is double the load frame’s gross weight (for frame weights, see “Load Frame Dimensions and Weight” on page 19) • Sharp knife • Screw removal tool • Protective padding for the crosshead • Two M16 hoist rings if using a crane To unpack and position the C43.104 load frame: 1.

Moving C43 (30 kN, 50 kN) and C44 Frames To right a package from a prone position: 1. Using a forklift, approach the frame from the light end of the package. 2. Insert the forks under the shipping skid. 3. Lift the whole assembly to about a 35° angle relative to the floor. 4. Wind the safety line or safety belt between the package and forklift carriage to prevent the package from overturning suddenly. 5.
Moving C43 (30 kN, 50 kN) and C44 Frames 7. Before placing the frame in its operating location, you must insert the leveling feet into each corner of the base. The shipping skid must be removed to insert the feet and before placing the frame in its operating location. Remove the shipping skid, insert the leveling feet, and position the frame. Follow the instructions described under “Crosshead method” on page 40. When the frame is in its operating location, you can proceed with the installation process.
Moving C43 (30 kN, 50 kN) and C44 Frames To transport the load frame using the crosshead method: 1. Ensure that there are no shipping bolts attached to the skid. 2. Using a forklift with padded forks or protective material around the crosshead, carefully insert the forks under the crosshead between the columns. WARNING The frame may overturn suddenly when lifting the frame. An overturned frame can cause injury or death to anyone in the immediate area.
Moving C43 (30 kN, 50 kN) and C44 Frames Crane method MTS recommends using professional riggers experienced in moving heavy equipment. To transport the load frame using the crane method: 1. Attach the two lifting slings to hoist rings of the top plate and secure them to the crane hook. WARNING The frame may overturn suddenly when lifting the frame. An overturned frame can cause injury or death to anyone in the immediate area.

Moving C45 Frames The C45 frame has been shipped in a horizontal position, so it must be moved into an upright, standing position before placing it in its operating location. The package cannot be uprighted directly. You need to unpack the package, and then move the frame into an upright, standing position . WARNING The MTS Criterion frames are heavy. Moving the frame using improper procedures can injure personnel (for example, strained muscles and back injuries) or damage the frame.
Moving C45 Frames Procedure To lift the load frame into a vertical position: 1. Remove all packaging material from the frame and ensure that the frame is not attached to the shipping skid. 2. Attach the two lifting slings to the hoist rings of the top plate and secure them to the crane hook. WARNING The frame may overturn suddenly when lifting the frame. An overturned frame can cause injury or death to anyone in the immediate area.
