Maintaining
WARNING
Be sure to shut
the engineoff,
removeignition key,
disconnectthe spark
plugwire(s) and
groundagainstthe
engine to prevent
unintended starting
before removingthe
belt(s).
Avoidthe possibilityof
a pinchinginjury.Do
notplaceyour fingers
on the idler springor
betweenthe belt and a
puley while removing
the belt.
Changing the Deck Belt
_ ARNING:Besuretoshutthe engineoff,
removeignition key,disconnect the spark
plug wire(s) andground against the engine
to prevent unintended startingbefore
removingthe belt(s).
WARNING:Avoid the possibilityofa
pinchinginjury. Donot placeyour fingers
on the idler spring or between the belt and
apulley while removing the belt.
Allbeltsonyourtractoraresubjecttowearandshouldbe
replacedifanysignsofweararepresent.
iMPORTANT:The V-beltsfoundonyourtractorare
speciallydesignedtoengageanddisengagesafely.A
substitute(non-OEM)V-beltcan bedangerousby not
disengagingcompletely.Fora properworkingmachine,
usefactoryapprovedbelts.
Tochangeor replacethe deckbeltonyourtractor,
proceedas follows:
1. Lowerthe deckby movingthe deck liftleverintothe
bottomnotchonthe rightfender.
2. Removethe beltguardsbyremovingthe self-tapping
screwsthatfastenthemtothe deck.
3. Toeaseinremovingthe belt inlater steps,loosen,
butdo not remove,the boltwhichsecuresthe
pivotingidlerpulleyto the idlerbracket.SeeFig.6-6.

8. Routethe newbeltsas shownbelowin Fig.6-7or 6-8.
9. Retightenthebolt whichsecuresthe pivotingidler
pulleyto the idlerbracket.
10.Remountthe beltguardsremovedearlier.
Changing the Transmission Drive Belt
NOTE:Severalcomponentsmustbe removedandspecial
tools(i.e.air/impactwrench)inordertochangethe
tractor'sdrive belt.Seean authorizedMTDServiceDealer
to haveyourdrivebelt replacedor phoneCustomerSup-
portas instructedonpage2 for informationonorderinga
ServiceManual.
4. Inserta 3/8"-driveratchetwrench(setto tighten)into
the squareholefoundin the idlerbracketon the left
sideof the deck'ssurface.SeeFig.6-6.
5. Graspthe ratchet'shandleandpivotitto relieve
tensiononthe belt.
6. Withbelttensionrelieved,carefullyremovethe belt
fromaroundthe left-handspindlepulley.
IMPORTANT:Carefullyallowthe ratchetto pivotrearward
beforeremovingit fromthe squarehole.
7. Removethedeckbelt fromaroundall pulleys,
includingthe deckidlerpulley(s)andthe electric
PTOclutch.
