4-38 NPort Server Lite User’s Manual
Configuring the IP Addresses
There are four steps that must be followed to properly configure the two NPort Server Lites
so that they will able to communicate with each other over the Ethernet network. In the
following example we assume that the servers are called NPL1 and NPL2, and that
NPL1 (Master) should have IP address set to 192.168.1.1
NPL2 (Slave) should have IP address set to 192.168.1.2
1. The IP addresses of the two servers can be set by either using the LCD buttons, or by
using the Telnet program. It doesn’t matter which method you use, so just choose the
method that is most convenient for you. (See Chapter 3 for complete instructions.)
2. The Remote IP of each server must be set to the IP address of the other server. If you
are using the LCD buttons, note that Remote IP is located three functions below IP
Address, under Network Setting (Appendix B contains a tree graph showing
how to use the LCD buttons to reach each of these functions).
3. As indicated above, one server must be set to Master, and one server must be set to
Slave. (It doesn’t matter which is the Master and which is the Slave; what does matter
is that they are not both set to Master, or both set to Slave.)
If you are using the LCD buttons to configure IP addresses, the Master/Slave setting is
part of the Operation Mode setting, which is under Server Setting. Consequently
you should:
Set the Operation Mode of NPL1 to PAIR (MASTER)
Set the Operation Mode of NPL2 to PAIR (SLAVE)
4. After accepting the Operation Mode of PAIR (MASTER) and PAIR (SLAVE), the
servers will reboot. The NPort Server Lite that was set as Master will have a blinking
M at the end of the second line, and the server set to Slave will have a blinking S at
the end of the second line. Once the Master locates the Slave on the network, the M
will stop blinking, and once the Slave locates the Master, the S will stop blinking.
