coaxial cable (coax) A type of wire consisting of a center wire surrounded by insulation and a grounded shield of braided wire. The shield minimizes
electrical and radio frequency interference.
configuration data The data the Communications Gateway downloads from servers specified by your service provider. This includes requesting an
IP address from a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server, downloading a DOCSIS configuration file from a Trivial
File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server, and obtaining the network time-of-day.
converged services Cable television, high-speed Internet access, telephone service, and other information services provided over a single coaxial
cable network.
DOCSIS The CableLabs Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) and EuroDOCSIS define interface standards for
cable modems, Communication Gateways, and supporting equipment.
driver Software that controls an add-on device such as a printer, scanner, cable modem, or Communications Gateway connected to a
computer.
download To copy a file from one computer to another. You can use the Internet to download files from a server to your home PC. A
DOCSIS Communications Gateway downloads its configuration from a server during start-up.
downstream In a cable data network, downstream describes the direction of data transferred from the Internet to your computer.
