Memory Power Macintosh - 1 9
Power Macintosh
8600 Series
The Power Macintosh 8600
Series logic boards have eight
DRAM DIMM slots, each with
a 64-bit data bus. You can
increase the computer’s
DRAM to a total of 512 MB
using 5-volt, 64-bit-wide,
168-pin fast-paged mode or
EDO DIMMs.

VRAM DIMM slots
VRAM Note: This computer uses VRAM
DIMMs (112-pin, 70 ns or faster) instead
of VRAM SIMMs. The VRAM SIMMs used in
earlier Power Macintosh models are not
compatible. There are 4 VRAM slots. 1 MB
DIMMs are installed in pairs, making VRAM
expandable to 4MB.
Memory Information
DRAM Speed 70 ns
DIMM Type +5V 168-pin
Soldered DRAM None
Number of DIMM Slots 8
Supported Sizes in MB 4, 8, 16, 32, 64
Maximum DRAM 512 MB
Virtual Memory 1 GB
Soldered VRAM None (See Note)
Number of VRAM Slots 4 (2 MB
installed)
Note: DRAM DIMMs can be installed
individually; however, to provide maximum
performance, install the DIMMs in matching
pairs and in paired slots (A4 and B4 first,
then A3 and B3, etc.).
Note: The Single In-Line Memory Modules
(SIMMs) used in previous Macintosh models
are NOT compatible with the Power
Macintosh 8600. This computer supports
+5V DIMMs only.
Note: The Power Macintosh 8600 does not
have any main memory soldered to the logic
board. At least one DRAM DIMM must be
installed for the computer to operate.
DRAM Configurations
32 MB The Power Macintosh 8600
logic board has 32 MB of
installed DRAM.
Up to
512 MB
Use 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 MB
168-pin DIMMs.
