The equipment required to set up a protocol analyzer includes:
1 hub
Some Ethernet switches have a monitor mode (also called 'port mirroring', 'port monitoring’). To
ensure that all packets are captured, set up a monitoring port on the hub/switch to monitor/mirror
the ports to which the network equipment and premises are connected.
1 laptop computer with protocol analyzer software installed
2 straight-through Ethernet cables
1 power converter
Analyzing Traffic at an SM
The IP address of the protocol analyzer laptop computer must match the IP addressing scheme of
the SM. If the SM has DHCP enabled, then configure the laptop computer to automatically obtain
an address. If DHCP is not enabled, then ensure that the laptop computer is configured with a
static IP address in the same subnet as the SM.
The configuration for analyzing traffic at an SM is shown below:
