Glossary
Squelch The muting of audio circuits when received
signal levels fall below a pre-determined
threshold. With carrier squelch, you hear all
channel activity which exceeds the radio’s
preset squelch level.
Standby An operating condition whereby the radio’s
speaker is muted but still continues to receive
data.
Talkgroup An organization (or group) of radio users who
communicate with each other, using the same
communication path.
Tone Private-Line
(PL) Coded
Squelch
A continuous sub-audible tone transmitted with
the carrier.
Trunking The automatic sharing of communications
paths between a large number of users. Allows
radio users to share a smaller number of
frequencies because a repeater, or
communications path, is assigned to a
talkgroup for the length of a conversation.
Zone A grouping of channels or talkgroups.
