Chapter 2 Using your J3600 Using the battery 54
Hot swapping the battery
Changing a battery while the Tablet PC is in use and running on battery power is called “hot
swapping.” You can hot swap a battery only if you have a second charged battery to replace
the battery that is low on power.
To swap a battery with a Tablet PC containing one battery and a battery bay cartridge
(non-functioning):
If your Tablet PC has a battery and battery bay cartridge (non-functioning) installed,
remove the battery bay cartridge and install the second battery. For information about
removing the battery, see Removing and replacing the J3600 battery on page 53.
To hot-swap a battery with a Tablet PC containing two batteries:
If your Tablet PC has two batteries installed, remove the battery with the lowest power
and install the charged battery. For information about removing the battery, see
Removing and replacing the J3600 battery on page 53.
To determine which battery requires charging, see the procedure for checking battery
status from the battery on page 52.
Important: Use only Motion Computing J-Series batteries with the J3600 Tablet PC.
Long-term battery storage
Don’t store any batteries with a full charge; this can cause a permanent loss of charging
capacity. For long-term storage, ensure that the charge level is between 20% and 40% (two
contiguous LEDs illuminated), and remove the battery from the Tablet PC. Check stored
batteries every 90 days to determine the charge status. If only one LED or no LED is
illuminated, recharge the batteries to a level between 20% and 40%.
For optimum care, store the battery in a cool, dry environment. Never expose the battery to
temperatures above 60ºC (140ºF).
N
OTE: In storage, the batteries will self-discharge at a rate of 10% of the total capacity per month.
Disposing of used batteries
Don’t throw a Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery in a waste receptacle. It should be disposed of at a
hazardous materials recycling center when its no longer serviceable.
Battery and power management tips
To lengthen the batterys usable life, use AC power when you can. The battery charges
automatically when the Tablet PC runs on AC power.
For optimal battery life, use AC power when using a USB device such as a DVD player or
external hard disk drive.
