 The combustible area above the facing must not protrude more than 3/4" from the
facing. If it does, it is considered a mantel and must meet the mantel requirements listed in
this manual.

All mantel shelves, regardless of depth, should be a minimum of 13" from
top opening of fireplace. Mantel shelf shall not exceed 1" maximum depth
at 13" minimum height from opening.
