STAIRS AND STEP DOWNS
Mohawk provides coordinating stair nosing to provide a bullnose-curved edge for stairs or floors that end
at a step-down.
INSTALLING MOHAWK LAMINATE ON STAIRS
You can install Mohawk Laminate to both the stair’s vertical riser and the step tread. This is the only time
that you’ll glue the laminate planks directly to the sub-structure. Use construction adhesive in a caulking
tube or parquet adhesive to glue the planks securely. You will not require spacers to maintain the 3/8-inch
expansion space in these small areas.
✓ Install the riser section first, so that you can account for its
thickness when installing the nosing.
✓ Fit the tread sections flush on the sides and back, but main-
tain the expansion space in the front, where the nosing will
cover it.
✓ If the plank is not wide enough to cover the tread, you’ll
need to cut a second thinner piece to fill the space. Install
this at the back of the step.
✓ Allow space at the front edge of the tread to allow the
nosing’s placement.
✓ Nosing must be glued to a squared (right-angled) edge. Any
existing curved edges on treads must be removed. The tread
edge should be flush to the vertical surface of the riser.
✓ If the tread overhangs the riser, you’ll need to cut a plank
into narrow strips and apply a separate piece on the riser.
Check local building codes for any stair requirements before modifying the dimensions of the tread.
✓ Use your adhesive to glue the nosing onto the step edge. For safety, also fasten the nosing with trim
screws or finish nails. Countersink the heads and fill the holes with coordinating Mohawk Putty. You
can also use a matching wax filler stick.
INSTALLING MOHAWK LAMINATE ON STEP DOWNS
You’ll use a different installation technique when you install Mohawk Laminate at the top of a flight of
stairs or at a step down into another room. You’ll utilize the Mohawk Stair Nosing, which provides a curved
edge for stairways and floors that end in a step down.
✓ First, fasten the stair nosing directly to the sub-floor with your adhesive. Maintain the 3/8-inch ex-
pansion space between the plank and the stair nosing.
✓ Use a finishing nail or screw to secure the stair nosing in the middle of the width of the piece.
✓ Countersink the fastener heads and fill the holes with coordinating Mohawk Putty or a wax filler
stick.
