3.3 Antenna Patterns
Antenna patterns have three main components:
• lobes
• relative gain
• tilt angle
3.3.1 Lobes
Antennas do not radiate and receive signals equally well in all directions. When depicted graphically, this
results in a pattern that has lobes in it.

Figure 4 shows the top view, or horizontal component, of an antenna’s radiation pattern. As you move
around the antenna, the signal strength changes — the farther a lobe extends from the center of the circle,
the stronger the signal is in that direction.
