Interfaces on Back of Base Server
The back of the Inter-Tel 5000 Base Server consists of the connection interfaces for expansion
units, the local area network (LAN), external paging, Music On Hold, the PM-1 bay, and bays for
expansion modules.
Music-On-Hold Port: Connects an external music source (such as a radio, tape player, etc.)
that can be heard by callers when they are placed on hold or camped on. It may also be used
for endpoint background music. The port is an 1/8-inch (3mm), two-conductor (stereo), mini-
phone jack. For installation instructions, see page 5-192. In Database (DB) Programming, music
can be enabled or disabled, and each trunk group (as well as transfer audio) can be assigned
music, silence, or tick-tones. Refer to the Inter-Tel 5000 Features and Programming Guide, part
no. 580.8006 for details. This port supports A-law (European) or mu-law (USA) companding at
the system level, which is flagged in Database (DB) Programming (System\Flags\Companding
Type).
If desired, one external music source may be connected to the system to supply background
music and Music-On-Hold (MOH). The MOH jack is located on the rear of the system chassis.
MOH input circuitry is high-impedance (8.7 Kohm), which allows connection to any audio device
with an output impedance of 4–8.7 ohms. MOH inputs are rated at 1 V
RMS
. If input power
exceeds this rating, audio may be distorted. Because of this, Mitel recommends limiting the
input power to 1 W.
DB-15 connector: A 15-pin D-subminiature socket connector that provides electrical interface
to the optional, external Voice Processing Unit or Enterprise Messaging system.
Six-pin jacks: Together the jacks provide the system’s Power Fail Bypass feature through an
internal CO cutover relay. One of the jacks supplies two loop start trunk circuit interfaces. The
other jack supplies circuit interfaces for two single line devices.
External Paging Port: An RCA-type phono jack with an output impedance of 600 ohms.
Connects external paging speaker equipment to allow paging to large areas, such as
warehouses or loading docks. For installation instructions, see “Installing External Paging
Equipment” on page 5-193.
Power Cord Socket: For power supply requirements, see “Power Supply” on page 4-7.
Fuse: System fusing consists of one 250 V, 2 A fuse, located in the power cord connection
socket on the chassis.
IMPORTANT
When connecting external paging equipment to an LSM circuit, use a paging
amplifier that provides talk battery. When connecting external paging
equipment to the chassis, use a paging amplifier that does not provide talk
battery.
NOTICE
Using a paging amplifier with talk battery on an endpoint may damage the endpoint or the
module.
