Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Connections
To avoid electrically induced performance problems, all associated Mitel 5000 equipment should
be sourced from the same AC phase and ground reference. To assure that the electrical source
is the same, plug Mitel 5000 equipment into the same UPS unit. A common electrical source is
most critical with Mitel 5000 Base Server and associated Digital Equipment Interface (DEI)
units.
Because the CS-5600 Processing Server (PS-1) is IP networked, a common electrical source is
not as critical. However, if wattage and outlets are available, the CS-5600 should be maintained
on the same UPS. The CS-5600 Processing Server (PS-1) does not require its own UPS unit.
Comply with the following electrical requirements when installing or upgrading Mitel 5000
equipment:
Plug Mitel 5000 equipment into the same UPS unit, in particular the Base Server and
associated DEI units. If wattage and outlets are available, the CS-5600 Processing Server
(PS-1) should be maintained on the same UPS.
The UPS unit must be plugged into an isolated, dedicated circuit providing required
voltage, current, and grounding specifications.
The power rating of the UPS unit must exceed the combined power ratings of all Mitel
5000 units the UPS supports. Table 4-5 provides an example of the wattage ratings in
relation to the server equipment used. This information applies only to Mitel equipment.
Component systems having power supplies include the Mitel CS-5200/5400/5600
Communication Server, Digital Expansion Interface DEI(s), and the external voice processing
systems. The systems plug into the battery back-up unit, which must be plugged-in to an
isolated, dedicated circuit having the power specifications identified in “Power Supply” on
page 4-7.
Mitel recommends installing a backup power supply unit having the following characteristics:
Sine wave output
Transfer time of less than 20 msec
Low AC line transfer voltage, or cutoff circuit, of 100 VAC, minimum
The ampere-hour rating of the battery determines the system back-up time. Also, even if the
power supply unit possesses the specifications listed in the preceding paragraph, it cannot be
guaranteed that it will work properly with the Mitel system. Contact the Mitel CommSource
division for a listing of approved UPS/SPS units.
