Guidelines
The following sections provide guidelines about initial programming, IP networking
programming, and endpoint programming.
Initial Programming
Keep in mind the following guidelines when programming the system. Detailed descriptions for
the following steps can be found throughout this chapter or the Mitel 5000 Features and
Programming Guide, part number 580.8006.
1. Determine the system IP address. See page 6-8. The system is configured to obtain an
IP address automatically, using a DHCP server. However, you need this IP address if
connecting to the system over the network.
2. Make sure you have installed the driver that will allow you to use the USB-B port when
connecting directly to the system so that you can view online messages. See page 5-
104.
3. If you have installed DB Programming on your system, connect to the system through
the network, or you can connect through a modem. Refer to the Mitel 5000 Features and
Programming Guide, part number 580.8006.
4. Select System, and then click the Communication Server folder. Program the modules
that are installed in the system. See page 6-112.
5. Disable the Voice Processor port if you will not need it. See page 6-109.
6. Select Devices and assign extension numbers, as determined by your numbering plan.
Change any feature codes that conflict with extension numbers or that the customer
wants to change. Refer to the Mitel 5000 Features and Programming Guide, part
number 580.8006.
7. Change the home area codes [not applicable in Europe]. Refer to the Mitel 5000
Features and Programming Guide, part number 580.8006.
8. Program the Voice Processor. Refer to the Mitel 5000 Features and Programming
Guide, part number 580.8006, for the following tasks:
a. Create a Message Notification/Retrieval application and a Voice Mail Application.
Make sure they have the correct extension numbers.
b. Create a System Administrator mailbox for the endpoint that will serve as the Voice
Mail administrator. You can come back later to program the rest of the mailboxes or
you can do it now.
c. Assign the newly created System Administrator mailbox as the System Administrator.
9. Perform the remaining programming necessary to meet the customer’s needs. This may
include, but is not limited to, the following items. Refer to the Mitel 5000 Features and
Programming Guide, part number 580.8006, for this information.
• Voice Processor: Program other Voice Processor applications (including call
routing and Fax-On-Demand—if using an external voice processing system),
extension IDs, group lists, mailboxes, Voice Processor options, timers, custom
recordings, and system information.
• IP Private Networking: Program node IP connection groups and IP connections.
• Devices: Program individual hunt groups, page ports, nodes, endpoints, off-node
devices, trunk groups, node trunk groups, and trunks.
• System-Wide Flags: Program system flags to enable the necessary features. Note
that many installations will want to have the Handsfree Announce On System
Forward Transfer flag disabled; by default it is enabled.
• ACD Hunt Group Agent IDs: If needed, program the Agent IDs used in ACD hunt
groups.
