Attaching 6-Row and 50-Key Models
Install the 6-Row or Model 8450 50-Key (50-Button) DSS/BLF Unit as outlined in the following
procedure. For diagrams of the installation, see Figure 5-82 on page 5-217 and Figure 5-81 on
page 5-216.
1. Remove the baseplate from the back of the DSS/BLF Unit.
2. On the connector board located in the baseplate, plug the free end of the PCDPM-to-
DSS interface cable into the main connector (J1). The other end of the cable was
previously attached to the PC Data Port Module (PCDPM) on the corresponding
endpoint.
3. Plug the AC transformer cable into the power connector (J4) on the baseplate connector
board. The transformer will later be plugged into an AC power source. DSS/BLF Units
always require separate AC transformers. For a diagram of AC transformer
requirements, see Figure 5-73 on page 5-207.
4. To attach a second DSS/BLF Unit to the first unit:
a. Plug one end of a DSS-to-DSS interface cable into the secondary connector (J2) on
the baseplate connector board in the first unit.
b. Remove the baseplate from the back of the second DSS/BLF Unit.
c. Plug the other end of the DSS-to-DSS interface cable into the main connector (J1)
on the baseplate connector board in the second unit.
d. Plug the AC transformer cable into the power connector (J4) on the baseplate
connector board in the second unit. The transformer will later be plugged into an AC
power source. If more than one DSS/BLF unit is installed on an endpoint, each unit
must be equipped with an AC transformer. In addition, if using PCDPM part number
550.3014 on the corresponding endpoint, the PCDPM also must be equipped with an
AC transformer. PCDPM part number 550.3018 does not require an AC transformer.
For details, see “Connecting PCDPM Cables” on page 5-215.
5. To attach a third unit to the second unit, follow the same substeps outlined in step 4.
6. Perform the following DSS/BLF Unit self-test:
a. While holding down the first two buttons in row one (extension numbers 1000 and
1001 in the default database), plug the main AC transformer unit into an available AC
power source. Do not use the outlet for the system chassis. Check that all buttons
light. If an LED does not light, unplug the AC transformer and plug it in while holding
down the first two buttons in row one (ext. 1000 and 1001). If the test fails again,
replace the DSS/BLF Unit.
b. Press each button individually (in any order) to remove the lit status. When finished,
all buttons should not be lit. If an LED does not go out, unplug the AC transformer
and repeat steps a and b. If the test fails again, replace the DSS/BLF Unit. After all of
the buttons have been tested, it takes approximately 5 seconds for the DSS/BLF Unit
to return to normal operation.
c. Replace the baseplate on the back of the DSS/BLF Unit, taking care not to snag any
cables between the baseplate and housing.
