Installing an IP SLA
The IP SLA provides an interface between a standard single line endpoint and a 10/100Base-T
network. The Mitel 5000 platform operates only on a 100Base-T network. The IP SLA allows
you to make calls through the IP network. The IP SLA operates like a standard SLA. However,
its interface to the system is replaced by the Ethernet IEEE 802.3 10 Mbps UTP interface. The
IP SLA uses flash memory and its software can be updated over the LAN.
To install IP SLAs and associated single line endpoints:
1. Using CAT5e or CAT5 cable, connect the 10BASE-T jack on the IP SLA to the KS/SLA
jack on the 24 VDC adapter. For the correct power brick, see “Replacement Parts” on
page 7-2.
2. Using another CAT5e or CAT5 cable, connect the LAN jack on the 24 VDC adapter to
the LAN.
3. Connect the 24 VDC adapter to a 120 V wall socket.
4. Connect the single line cord to the SL PHONE jack. Within a few moments, the single
line endpoint will receive dial tone from the system.
5. Check connection state information while the IP SLA is connecting to the IPR
application. The following LEDs show connection state information, as described below.
• online: Indicates a connection between the IP SLA and system call processing.
• SL STATUS: Flashes in time with ringing voltage and is lit when the endpoint is off-
hook.
• IP STATUS: Lights when there is a valid Ethernet connection to the device.
The DEFAULT button has been added to the IP SLA (revision level -AC or later). This
button allows you to perform the two functions described on the following page.
IMPORTANT
Fax over IP (FoIP) and modems are not supported through an IP SLA. To
connect a fax machine, attach it to a single line port on one of the single line
interfaces supported by the Mitel 5000 platform. Mitel currently supports T.38
FoIP only.
NOTICE
Possible Equipment Damage. Use only the appropriate power adapter with the IP
SLA. Do not attach any device (for example, hubs) between the KS/SLA jack on the
adapter and the 10BASE-T jack on the IP SLA because power is supplied through the
cable.
