Installing an External Music Source
External music sources may be connected to the system for Music-On-Hold (MOH). The music
jack optional external music sources (radio, tape player, etc.) is on the back of the Inter-Tel 5000
Base Server chassis. The music source can be used for music-on-hold and background music.

For the music-on-hold feature, music, silence, ringback, or tick-tones can be assigned on a
station-by-station basis. For more information, refer to the Mitel 5000 Features and
Programming Guide, part number 580.8006.
Using background music and paging on a hard IP endpoint, such as the IP PhonePlus,
consumes as much bandwidth as a call to the device. If the site has limited bandwidth, ensure
that IP endpoint users do not enable background music and that they limit using the paging
functionality.
If using a radio as a music source, place it 5–10 ft (1.5–3 m) away from the chassis to avoid RFI
generated by the chassis. If the radio is placed more than 10 ft (3 m) away from the chassis,
use twisted-pair cable. For better reception, a radio with an external antenna is recommended.
To install the external music source:
1. Attach a 1/8-inch, two-conductor (mono), mini-phone plug to one end of a 5–10 ft (1.5–
3.0 m) length of shielded speaker cable, or twisted-pair cable, to run from the external
music source to the Mitel CS-5200/5400/5600 Base Server. A stereo plug will not work
properly in the MOH jack. If the stereo earphone output of an external music source is
used, a stereo-mono adapter should be used between the stereo output jack and the
monaural cable.
2. Do one of the following:
• Connect the other end of the cable to the speaker output terminals of the music
source.
• Attach the necessary connector to the other end of the cable, and plug it into the
earphone jack on the music source (if available). If the earphone jack is “padded”
so that the optimal volume level cannot be reached, connecting to the speaker
output terminals may be more effective.
3. Plug in the AC power cord for the music source. DO NOT use the same power outlet
used for the Inter-Tel 5000 Base Server. Turn on the AC power to the music source.
Also, Mitel recommends using an UPS.
4. Insert the 1/8-inch mini-phone plug into the jack labeled MOH on the back of the Mitel
CS-5200/5400/5600 Base Server. See Figure 5-66 on page 5-192.
NOTE
There are often broadcast restrictions associated with copyrighted music. Check
with the music’s original distributor and/or the broadcast source for restrictions and
usage concerning background music and music-on-hold. Mitel is not responsible for
any illegal or improper use of copyrighted music connected to the system. With
European systems, contact PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd.) for licenses.
