Upgrading Only Software
Before performing the following upgrade process and procedures, read “Network Environment
Requirements” on page 5-148 and “Upgrade Assumptions” on page 5-149.
The following process and applicable procedures apply to upgrading only the software version
running on Mitel CS-5200, CS-5400, or CS-5600 platforms. For other upgrade scenarios, see
Table 5-28.
For some of the tasks in this procedure, refer to the Mitel 5000 Features and Programming
Guide, part number 580.8006, as appropriate.
To upgrade the system version:
1. Obtain applicable licensing from the Licence Management Center (LMC), as necessary.
2. Back up system and voice mail databases. Partial Voice Processor saves are not
permitted when upgrading to v2.x.
3. Run DB Test & Repair.
4. Use the DB Conversion tool to convert the database to the correct version and system
type. See “Mitel 5000 Database Conversions” on page 6-23.
5. Configure the system to point to the correct Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server
and path, then upgrade the system to the latest release. See “Upgrading to v3.0” on
page 5-152.
6. Install applicable licensing for the upgraded version.
7. Restore saved databases. See “Restoring the Database” on page 5-94.
8. Perform a full save of the database and voice processor data after the upgrade is
complete.
9. Verify results by performing the following or similar tests:
Listen and confirm 2-way audio on IP-to-digital endpoint connections and between
digital-to-digital endpoint connections.
Test all trunks, incoming and outgoing.
Place incoming and outgoing calls.
Exercise the company’s dialing plan.
Test hunt group functionality, if applicable.
Confirm System Manager connections and functionality, if applicable.
Confirm functionality of all peripheral systems connected to or dependent on the
Mitel 5000 platform.
Confirm that emergency numbers work. However, before conducting the tests, be
sure to coordinate with appropriate local emergency response agencies.
IMPORTANT
When installing v2.0 or later software, the license must match the
system CPU type. A Mitel CS-5200 system requires a CS-5200
license; a Mitel CS-5400 system requires a CS-5400 license; and, a
Mitel CS-5600 system requires a CS-5600 license.
NOTICE
Possible Data Corruption. Do not unplug the chassis when the system is in the
process of upgrading because critical system data is migrating at this time.
