Installing/Upgrading the DEI Chassis
To install the DEI chassis:
1. Make sure you have upgraded system software to v3.0.
• If the system has DEIs, disconnect them, and connect only DEI #1. If a voice mail
system was connected to the last DEI, remove the VM—DEI cable from the last
DEI in the chain.
• If no DEIs exist, and you are adding new DEIs, connect only DEI #1.
See page “Upgrading System Software to Version 3.0” on page 5-148. Also, refer to the
DEI notice, part number 835.3242, that is included in the box with the DEI you want to
install.
2. Install the chassis in the rack under the Mitel CS-5200/5400/5600 Base Server. Allow
room below the chassis for future expansion (for example, more DEI chassis or an
optional voice processing system such as EM) and proper cooling. See Figure 5-58 on
page 5-167, Figure 5-59 on page 5-168, Figure 5-60 on page 5-169, and Figure 5-61 on
page 5-170 for examples.
3. When installing one or more DEIs, do the following:
a. Leave the system powered on. Do not power cycle the Base Server or PS-1, if
applicable.
b. Disconnect any existing DEI units.
c. Install the first DEI unit and connect the DEI cable to the system. After the first DEI is
installed and upgraded, power cycle the DEI, and then remove the cable and install
the next DEI. You can connect several DEI cables together as shown in Figure 5-61
on page 5-170 to extend the cable and reach other DEI units.
d. After the last DEI is upgraded, reconnect all DEIs and power up the system. All are
now functional and ready for programming.
To verify functionality and a successful upgrade:
1. Insert one DEM into each chassis and equip the DEM in DB Programming.
2. Check the log file in the Admin Web Session pages.
a. Establish an Admin Web session. Log on using the user name it5k. Use the default
password itpassw.
b. Click the Logging tab, then click the Log Files link in the navigation pane.
c. Locate the DEI Logs section and click romd_out_dei.log.
d. Locate the following line. This line indicates a successful DEI update.
"update_dei: Update done size = 65536, Reloading Prom"
An alternative method to check for when a DEI upgrade is complete is to look in
Message Print for the Digital Keyset Board online message. This method assumes
that at least one DEM module is inserted in the DEI and it is equipped in DB
Programming.
3. Do either of the following:
• Begin programming the system. Refer to the Mitel 5000 Features and
Programming Guide, part number 580.8006.
• Continue to installing other optional equipment:
o NuPoint Messenger: Refer to the Mitel 5000 and NuPoint Messenger
Integration Guide, part number 580.8008
o External USB modem (page 5-172)
