5000 Installation Manual – Issue 3.0, October 2008
Considerations
In addition to any hardware/software information discussed in the main manual and in the DEI
notice (part number 835.3242) that ships with the DEI unit, please take into consideration the
following, when installing and bringing up DEI units:
• Upgrade the system to v3.0 before installing and upgrading DEIs. A license is required for
each DEI you want to add. Perform a database backup and database save before
installing any DEIs. Be prepared to log on and view the logs.
• Use the Power Calculator to approximate the power usage for the Mitel 5000 chassis and
related peripherals, including the DEI chassis.
• The Power Calculator is available on the software CD-ROM or at the Mitel edGe Axxess
Software Utilities Web page (http://tinyurl.com/5nh6q5). For the purposes of the calculator,
the DEI chassis is classified as a Small App, and the CS-5600 chassis is classified as a
Medium App.
• In addition to the installation guidelines for hardware in the main manual, check for proper
grounding. For example, the ground lug on the chassis must be in parallel with the AC
ground via the power supply. Check with local Building Safety Inspectors on the
installation of the ground wire for the system. Conduit may be required between the
ground bar and earth ground. Refer to Inter-Tel’s System Equipment Grounding
Guidelines, part number 835.2845, for additional information.
• Detach the voice mail system from the last DEI in the chain before adding additional DEI
units. When installing and upgrading new DEIs, leave the system powered on, disconnect
existing DEIs, and connect new DEIs one at a time. If the system has DEIs, disconnect
them, and connect only DEI #1. If no DEIs exist, and you are adding new DEIs, connect
only DEI #1.
• If the attached DEIs do not come online, recycle the power on all DEIs; if they remain
offline, contact Technical Support for further assistance.
The DEI low-level firmware controls how it communicates. For this upgrade, the method of
communication changes. To update the DEI low-level firmware, it must be communicating
in the previous two-DEI configuration. The Mitel 5000 system software automatically loads
the latest DEI software when DEIs are connected and the system is restarted.
• When adding new DEI units, you can connect two DEI cables together to extend the reach
between the Mitel 5000 and the DEI units you want to add. This allows existing DEIs to
remain in place while you upgrade the new DEIs.
• When installing any DEI unit, make sure module bays are empty. DO NOT attach DEIs to
the system with populated module bays. Use the procedures in the main installation
manual for adding modules to the system. The servers are shipped without modules
installed. The examples throughout this document are for illustrative purposes only.
Module covers must remain in place if there is not an actual module to occupy a module
bay. The covers help to ensure foreign material does not enter the chassis.
• In 4-DEI mode, there are 48 voice channels to each DEI; this provides one voice channel
per digital endpoint. Features that require a second voice channel, such as OHVA, MDPM,
and dual-SLA, require special attention. Enable these features using the current methods;
however, these features use a voice channel that could otherwise be used by an endpoint
on the same DEI. DB Programming counts the time slots used by these features and
enforces the maximum timeslot limit for each DEI.
