Using Terminal Emulation to Retrieve Online Messages
The USB-B port is provided to allow monitoring information online using a terminal emulation
program such as Windows
®
HyperTerminal. You will need a USB cable with a standard USB
Type-A connector on one end and a Type-B connector on the other end. This interface is only
supported for terminal emulation use. Do not plug any other device (USB hub, etc.) into the
USB-B connection. Also, to avoid a drop in system performance, do not monitor a live system
for any length of time other than for troubleshooting purposes.
To retrieve online message information:
1. Pick a time to monitor system information when the system is not in use or at a time
when system traffic is the lowest, if possible.
2. Make sure you have installed the driver that will allow a PC or laptop to access the USB-
B port (“Installing the USB-B Port Serial Driver” on page 5-104).
3. Attach a USB 2.0 cable to the USB-B port on the front of the chassis.
4. Attach the other end of the cable to a PC or laptop USB port (standard USB connector).
5. Start the terminal emulation program
and set any configuration options the
program needs to communicate with
the Mitel 5000 platform. See the
documentation that came with the
terminal emulation program for this
information. For the terminal emulation
program you use, set the following options if available:
Communications Port: COM3
Bits Per Second: 115000
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None or n.
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Control: None.
6. Enter the system username (it5k) and password (itpassw). The “OLM>” prompt
appears on the screen, indicating you have logged in to the Online Monitor (OLM) shell.
To view a list of available commands, type help or ? at the OLM prompt, then press the
ENTER key.
To exit, type EXIT or . (period), then press the ENTER key.
NOTE
HyperTerminal does not support SSH encryption, which is required for TCP/IP
connections. The PuTTY
®
application can be used for these types of connections. A
copy of PuTTY is included on system CDs for v1.2 and later.
