To assemble the MDF:
1. Mount a 4 ft x 6 ft (1.2 m x 1.8 m), ¾-inch (2 cm) plywood backboard at the MDF
location. Depending on the number of stations and trunks to be installed, a larger
backboard may be necessary. If wall-mounting the Mitel CS-5200/5400/5600 Base
Server or DEI chassis, additional space will be required to allow for sufficient room to
insert/remove modules and wiring space/strain relief. A rack-mount kit is available from
the Mitel CommSource division that will allow the system to be wall-mounted.
2. With a U.S. system, attach 66M1-50-type terminal blocks to the plywood backboard.
With a European system, attach Krone blocks. Depending on installation requirements,
provision for the following terminal blocks and cabling:
• Up to 28 blocks for interconnecting trunks and station cables to the system. If more
than 28 blocks are needed, additional backboards may need to be mounted.
• One 25-pair cable—Quad RF-45 to Amp, part number 813.1814—for each
DEM-16.
• Sufficient amount of 24-gauge twisted-pair cabling and appropriate terminal plugs
(typically, RJ-11, RJ-14, RJ-45, and/or RJ-48C) to correctly install the job. Consult
with your sales engineering representative.
If you use three-pair cable, extra terminal blocks and cross-connect wiring techniques
are required.
3. If installing T1, T1/PRI, E/1, and/or E1/PRI trunks, attach eight-conductor modular jack
[line jack unit] assemblies to the MDF as required.
4. If installing BRI trunks [European only], attach the necessary connectors to the MDF.
5. If installing single line endpoints or DID [DDI] trunks, attach the necessary SLAs and
corresponding modular jack [line jack unit] assemblies to the plywood backboard. See
Figure 5-55 on page 5-140 and Figure 5-56 on page 5-140 for complete diagrams of the
SLA setup.
